Marco Silva admits Everton targeted Declan Rice on Saturday

Everton boss Marco Silva has told the Daily Mail that he formed a plan to target Declan Rice in his side's win over West Ham United.

Silva was under huge pressure heading into Saturday's game, and knew that he needed a win over the Hammers to give himself some more job security.

Everton produced a strong display, and took the lead through Bernard, as he ran onto Theo Walcott's pass, beat two challenges then prodded past Roberto Jimenez for the opener.

West Ham were flat and failed to really impress, and their fate was sealed late on as Gylfi Sigurdsson hammered a long-range strike into the net.

Everton took all three points in a much-needed 2-0 win, and Silva explained his side's gameplan following the final whistle at Goodison Park.

Silva admitted that Everton had a plan to target Declan Rice in the West Ham midfield, feeling they could exploit space around the much-lauded England international.

Rice is a lot of things, but quick isn't one of them, and having three speedy players – Bernard, Alex Iwobi and Walcott – working around him helped create space.

Silva admitted that was the idea all along, with Bernard and Walcott sitting narrow, and he hailed Walcott's performance as a key in executing the plan.

“Theo is a really important player for me and for us,” said Silva. “He showed me during the week he was ready to play and I gave him a chance because he deserved it.”

“We had a plan to find space either side of Declan Rice and Theo was key. It was a tough moment for him when he got that injury against City in the first minute. His was an individual performance of the highest level along with others,” he added.

I saw the game at Bournemouth and Rice's effort was huge. Far more than any of our front 6 by a country mile. The other's probably performed at 95%. You need 100%,that's why we drew that game.He can't do everything. The players were at 80% way,way below what is needed.
I think Pellegrini has pushed Noble furhter forward when we are pressing, along side Haller at times. This means the other 3 are asked to do a defemsive job. Neither Anderson,Yarmelenko or Lanzini do enough.

Rice was pretty culpable for the second.

If they were targeting Rice, I think he did well. I don’t remember him being at fault for either goal? The disappointment was we never really got going in attack and our forwards appeared incapable of holding onto the ball.

As many have mentioned it was more a plan to target everyone who wasn’t Declan Rice.

Put lots of players around and about him and rely on the fact that none of the others would have any inclination to do any tracking , tackling or hard work.
Worked a dream

Helped by the fact the ref didn’t book Gomes until 90th minute. He must have made over 30 fouls

It’s not they targeted Rice, more that they exploited the space either side of him.

Mad Dog, I remember Alex Song being once or twice as good as adequate for us but never being mustard.

Yes Marco Silva made Rice play crap. He also made Rice stop running or tackling too. He is also responsible for Rice's pasty complection. This explains it. Mind control.

I remember when Alex song was mustard for us, then teams realised this and targeted him.

Sense of dejavu

He's one man, we cant rely on just 1 player

We’ve got one central midfielder, you’d have to be a complete fool not to target him.

Was there Saturday and it was pretty apparent they ha a plan and we didn't. Not the first game this season that's happened either.

I’d say that was more luck than judgement. Also watch Everton lose their next 2 or 3 games as it’s the West Ham way

Indeed we did.

falace, he targeted the position Rice played as being vulnerable because he knew there would be a lack of support from Noble, Lanzini, Anderson and Fornels.

We all knew that too.

I would have thought every manager would be looking at our center midfield and thinking exactly the same.

Re: Marco Silva admits Everton targeted Declan Rice on Saturday
Doest sound like targeting him more playing around and away from him because he has absolutely no support in front of the defence with Noble for some reason pressing so high up the pitch

I thought that their main tactic on Saturday was for Richarlison to keep falling over and appealing for free kicks.

Re: Marco Silva admits Everton targeted Declan Rice on Saturday
Did they target Rice or did our ball players fail to support our 2 man midfield?

As I have said previously I think it is time to sacrifice 1 and play a more solid 3 in midfield.

agreed that the players should be spotting it as well.

but ultimately MP is the one responsible for who plays where.
