FRENCH POLICE ARREST TWO ROMANIAN LORRY DRIVERS AFTER BRITISH BORDER GUARDS IN CALAIS DISCOVERED EIGHT AFGHAN MIGRANTS INCLUDING TWO INFANTS IN A REFRIGERATED TRUCK BOUND FOR UK

The arrests were made in the port of Calais in France at 5am on Sunday morning

The Romanian lorry drivers were tonight held in custody after the discovery

It came after 39 bodies were found in a back of a refrigerated truck in Essex

Two Romanian lorry drivers have been arrested after eight Afghans, including two young children, were found suffering from hypothermia in the back of a refrigerated truck in Calais.

The arrests were made in the French port at 5am on Sunday morning as the men attempted to drive onto a ferry heading to the UK.

It came after 39 bodies were found in a back of a similar refrigerated lorry in Essex, and the driver was charged with multiple counts of manslaughter.

The Romanian drivers were tonight held in custody in France. Two of the Afghan children involved were reportedly 'tiny infants', suggesting they were babies or young toddlers.

Commenting on the new incident in northern France, an investigating source said: 'The Afghans in the back of the truck were suffering from mild hypothermia.

'It would have got far worse if they had remained in place, but they were taken to hospital in Calais for immediate treatment.

'The drivers are suspected of trying to smuggle the people to England. They are both of Romanian nationality, and are now in custody, and facing charges.

'It was British border force guards who discovered the migrants, and they called the French authorities to make the arrests.'

Prosecutors in Boulogne-sur-Mer, near Calais, confirmed the arrests, and said that the temperature inside the truck was around 7C.

They said judicial police were currently working on establishing the route of the lorry. The identities of the lorry drivers and those on board have not been released.

Calais-Dover is a regular route for people smugglers, who charge up to £10,000 a head in the back of a lorry for would-be asylum seekers.

The route is particularly popular with Afghans, who often have family and friends in the UK, and speak English.

The number of desperate attempts by migrants to get to Britain from France has been increasing steadily in recent months.

This is despite a new action plan involving the British government paying millions to try and secure France’s northern coast with technology including drones.

Many have blamed this on the approach of Brexit, suggesting that borders will become tighter once the UK leaves the EU.

The French authorities are regularly criticised for releasing those caught making illegal attempts to get to Britain.

Many are simply driven to Belgium - the country from which they entered France - and then left to return.

Most want to make asylum claims in the UK, rather than in France, where it is much harder for foreigners to access social security benefits.

British funding for new security measures was first pledged as part of the Sandhurst agreement in 2018, when the UK agreed to pay £44.5m for detection technology.

Asylum seekers are technically obliged to claim asylum in their first safe country, but many Afghans are desperate to get to Britain.

That is so true. All most people in the west "know" about these countries is the big touristy areas and their associated reputations.

Their only experience of the west is via the glamour of Hollywood and TV shows - where the good guys always win.

It will only get worse for these people as farmers/land owners mechanise - a single tractor can put a whole family out of work forever, and, out in the sticks, there really is no viable alternative to agricultural labour.

Having lived in Thailand in worked in Vietnam for 5 months. When you get outside of citys and resorts they are nice unassuming , hard working people with and have huge extend families , completely innocent to these cunts who exploit that. That message from that poor young girl who was dying to her mum still chokes me up . I cannot look at her picture in BBC site its just so sad

One of the poor victims thought she would earn between £1500-£2000 a month working in a nail bar!

£31k to travel to the UK by lorry 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

How much would it cost to get a fake passport and papers and then fly to the UK?

Oioi

It won’t work , they will just sit in hollow tubes .

Containers have no power and are usually packed floor to ceiling . Hiding in the goods is pretty easy.

I still think a system with internal cameras would work. How hard can it be?

Re: 39 dead in a lorry in Essex
Although terrible, Im shocked that the families wouldnt be aware of the associated risks? Surely they didnt think it would be first class travel all the way?

I see the MP's have gone quiet on the subject an all

One thing I find confusing is that surely they know a reefer is going to airtight so why use one for smuggling tiddlies?

Maybe there was an air hole that was meant to be left open or something and being the thick paddies they forgot to open it.

Re: 39 dead in a lorry in Essex
oioi - most security cameras are not monitored in real time by "a bloke".

If they're monitored at all it's by a computer algorithm that raises an alarm. The person receiving that alarm could be on the other side of the planet - sleeping.

It would be easy enough to block any such cameras installed in a container, in any case, with the legitimate load.

Re: 39 dead in a lorry in Essex
Wouldn't it be possible and quite cheap to insist that all containers have security cameras mounted inside? Then they have to pull up next to a bloke with an iPhone or similar device who can see the contents on his screen.

Bit rich the families moaning about the conditions in the truck.
You paid 30k to be smuggled into a country, what were you expecting?

Ok, without getting all MELTING POINT OF STEEL over this, all I am trying to ascertain is whether the driver's claim of 'only opening the trailer to access some paperwork' is bollocks or not.

Because otherwise, it looks like he opened the doors to let the illegal immigrants out.
