As someone mentioned you’d probably have to blame Higuain for any doubts about Messi.
In the 1986 World Cup Maradona was superb but was marked out of most of the final.
With 5 mins to go at 2-2 he played a brilliant ball to Burrachaga who still had a lot to do but scored the winner.

Messi was brilliant in 2014 and laid on an absolute sitter for the fat former Chelsea cunt Higuain who fucked it up at 0-0 and they went on to lose.

When your drop in performance coincides with you only scoring 50 goals a season, then you are probably talking about the best ever. That statistic about him alone scoring more direct free kicks than any team in Europe is astounding.

Apart from all that, he’s a fantastic player to watch. Absolutely incredible.

What struck me about the Maradona film is how, relatively speaking, short his time at the very top was.

Certainly lacked the staggering consistency of Messi and Ronaldo, who have been extraordinary for around 15 years.

Regarding talent, Maradona was of course ridiculously gifted, but, for me, Messi has the same gifts with the added attributes of being lightning quick (at his peak) and a goal machine (73 goals in a season and 91 in a calendar year may never be matched).

Messi between about 2008 and 2015 is the best I have ever seen. His level has dropped since then due to losing pace, but he’s still able to bang in about 50 a season and drop deep to provide assists for the other attackers.

Anyway, it’s all subjective, innit?

Comes out on Sky next week.

If people have seen it now, then it's likely a dodgy download.

Re: Messi overtakes Ronaldo for number of club goals
So you’ve went from “better free kick taker” to realizing he isn’t at all, like not even close to Messi.

Then you brought up English teams and stoke for some reason, and you realized how silly that argument is. Now you’re talking about the euros final, that Ronaldo played 5 minutes off. Yet you completely forget that Messi dragged his side to a World Cup final only for higuain to miss a sitter that Messi set up.

You are the site idiot so I’ll leave it there son. Have a good day.

If Maradona could have played with today's refereeing he would have scored 3 goals and the opponents would have two players red carded every match.

Re: Messi overtakes Ronaldo for number of club goals
He hasn't won any international tournaments, with a far superior squad that what Ronaldo has to work with, nor has he won anything outside the Spanish League.

Sorry, you cannot suggest he's any better until he's managed this. Which he won't.

Re: Messi overtakes Ronaldo for number of club goals
It’s as if Messi hasn’t scored a load of goals against every English team he’s played against.

But yeah you’re right he’s shitting of Danny higginbottom and Robert Huth.

Re: Messi overtakes Ronaldo for number of club goals
The very fact Ronaldo done his very own "Maradona" by taking a bang average national side to international glory says it all, son.

Not to mention playing in 3 different leagues winning titles.

He. also done it on a cold windy night at stoke. Messi hasn't.

Maybe, but Messi's boot is also glued to the ball, as was George Best's.

If you are talking all time best footballer with the ball at his feet then it isn't even up for debate. Maradona was a different level.

Re: Messi overtakes Ronaldo for number of club goals
Never has a player lived in such a bubble as he did there, they become completely obsessed with him and actually believed that he was God, taking his blood to the church, naming kids after him etc. Can argue who was the greatest player all day, but there will never be a bigger name in football than Maradona. One reason for this is his tough childhood and his socialist stance against regimes, governments etc. He could go to open a supermarket in New Delhi and 50000 people would turn up.
