Dalian Atkinson murder trial

It's ambitious of the CPS to charge the officer with murder, for which intention to cause at least grievous bodily harm is required. If using a Taser (even multiple times) is evidence of an intention to cause GBH, you wonder why they are authorised for police use at all. Assuming the jury finds that the cop was acting unlawfully, manslaughter seems a more likely verdict.

Got to investigate for sure but on taking the 999 call if they had said sorry to voilent sort it yourself and put the phone down there be hell to pay for.

Maybe they should have done.

I haven’t said I believe it just reporting what has been said by a local PCSO to me.
Also the coppers were told not to taser him by his family due to his weak heart.
Apparently they repeatedly did so.

"Atkinson died on 15 August 2016 after being tasered by police near his father's house in Trench, Telford. Police had responded to a call as Atkinson threatened to kill his father, Ernest. Atkinson's older brother Kenroy said "My brother had lost it. He was in a manic state and depressed – out of his mind and ranting. He had a tube in his shoulder for the dialysis and he had ripped it out and was covered in blood. He got dad by the throat and said he was going to kill him. He told dad he had already killed me, our brother Paul and sister Elaine and he had come for him." After being tasered, Atkinson went into cardiac arrest on the way to the Princess Royal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 03:00"



Telford, you honestly believe the police, in this day and age of public scrutiny and camera phones etc, decided to give him a few digs on the floor after they'd tasered him? Seems very far fetched to me, he was obviously a very ill man both physically and mentally and it sounds like his death was a tragic, if somewhat inevitable accident.

I used to go to school with Dalian and my mrs at the time he was at Ipswich was best mates with his mrs (Derrin I think her name was)
From what I can recall he always came across as genuinely decent and humble bloke.
I knew he had some mental issues after finishing as a pro and fell out with his family .
I live about 200yds from where this incident took place and I know some of the local coppers and the story goes the coppers gave him a few digs whilst he was on the floor being subjected to repeat doses of the Taser hence
the charges.

That reminds me of the coach of opposition team in kids football punching the 15 year old brother of one of our players full in the face at a match once.

The bloke's statement was something like, "I wished to calm the situation so I punched him in the face".

That's on the estate I grew up on, and I was there that day at my mum's, the day after the saints 3-0 home win in May. I wondered at the time what the police helicopter was looking at. Absolute wrong'un, the lad with the petrol.

I think they have charged him with murder and manslaughter haven't they - covering all bases.

There MUST be more to this than he simply tasered him. You need "intent" for murder.

For the sake of argument if:

a) Atkinson had resisted arrest and hit one of the officers

b) Atkinson then calmed down

c) The officer had though lost his rag and shouted "taser taser"

d) Atkinson had completely stopped any aggression. His relative shouted "he's got a weak heart don't taser him"

e) The copper tasered him anyway just because he was pissed off

That could legally be murder

The above scenario seems very unlikely - I'm just saying it's theoretically possible.

In America they would just have shot him.

Like many have said he was tasered for a reason, his father called the police because he was behaving erratically so what were they suppose to do?

Keeps the black lives matter campaigners happy.

I have found in my 52 years that if you keep your head down and just behave yourself you are less likely to get shot, tasered or beaten up by the police.
