Have to agree with what most have said.

An unassuming bloke with a cracking sence of humour.

RIP.

Am presuming the last part of that poem refers to him getting chucked out by his wife for having an affair with a former model 25 years younger than him (the ex wife of Dr Geoffrey Edelsten who owned the Sydney Swans AFL club).
For about 8 years while he was past 60

He came from an era where writers drank , smoked and liked women.

Re: Clive James has died aged 80
I recommend his book "Unreliable Memoirs" especially his description of when the Dunny Man would visit when he lived in Australia..

Of all the stories of a Sydney summer, the best is told by Clive James in Unreliable Memoirs. The setting is Kogarah. It's the day before Christmas Eve. Clive has left his pushbike sprawled across the driveway.

He goes inside and, from that moment on, the story is told through sound. The dunny man arrives to collect the "night soil" from the unsewered toilet down the back. Young Clive, sitting inside, hears him arrive. The man thumps down the drive, leaps over the bike, opens the dunny door, clips a tin lid to the can, and then – with an oomph of effort – heaves the brimming can onto his shoulder.

Then there's the run back down the drive. Next – due to a moment's inattention – the sound of "a dunny man running full tilt into a bicycle". He comes down heavily. So does the overly full can.

And, amid the cacophony, there's "the tiny but significant" sound of a clipped lid springing off. The tale ends with a final sound effect: that of a million flies making their way to Kogarah.

Writes James: "They were coming from all over Australia."

The pictures, you'll notice, are incredibly vivid – partly because they are supplied through sound. Here's my belief: people see more vividly through their ears than they ever do through their eyes.

But are they lessons, all these things I learn
Through being so far gone in my decline?
The wages of experience I earn
Would service well a younger life than mine.
I should have been more kind. It is my fate
To find this out, but find it out too late.

The mirror holds the ruins of my face
Roughly together, thus reminding me
I should have played it straight in every case,
Not just when forced to. Far too casually
I broke faith when it suited me, and here
I am alone, and now the end is near.

Used to be his postman when he lived in the Barbican.

I was only 17 and slightly awestruck as I'd not met famous people. He seemed to sense that fact and always put on his friendly Australian 'how you doin' mate? ' which I really appreciated, especially as I was also Norman Tebbit''s postie too and he made me feel like something he'd scraped off his shoe.

RIP Clive. You were a proper gent.

Well said. Loved watching Clive James as a kid when he did the on TV and travel documentaries I think. Wonderful play on words, delivery and humour and genuinely seemed a nice fella.

Remember Jonathan Miller on TV too and Gary Rhodes far too young.

Re: Clive James has died aged 80
He was given his fatal diagnosis ten years ago and decided to throw himself into his poetry and translate Dante's Inferno (which got very good reviews).
Here's an example:

Japanese Maple

Your death, near now, is of an easy sort.
So slow a fading out brings no real pain.
Breath growing short
Is just uncomfortable. You feel the drain
Of energy, but thought and sight remain:

Enhanced, in fact. When did you ever see
So much sweet beauty as when fine rain falls
On that small tree
And saturates your brick back garden walls,
So many Amber Rooms and mirror halls?

Ever more lavish as the dusk descends
This glistening illuminates the air.
It never ends.
Whenever the rain comes it will be there,
Beyond my time, but now I take my share.

My daughters choice, the maple tree is new.
Come autumn and its leaves will turn to flame.
What I must do
Is live to see that. That will end the game
For me, though life continues all the same:

Filling the double doors to bathe my eyes,
A final flood of colors will live on
As my mind dies,
Burned by my vision of a world that shone
So brightly at the last, and then was gone.

Darlo, Clive James started it with Clive James on Television and then Tarrant took over with Tarrant on TV a few years later.
