BBC League of the Decade
|
Go take a look on BBC Sport web page, quite revealing how we’ve performed over the last ten years. Below Southampton. Below Stoke City. Below Crystal Palace. Below, would you believe , Sheffield United. Goes to show that expectations, including mine, have been way too high in recent years and we are where we deserve to be. The ‘next level’ merchants have failed to deliver and will continue to do so.

To me next level is guaranteed top 10. CL is several levels up.

Oh yeah, you're right it's three top ten finishes out of seven. Not bad I suppose, but the point remains that one top ten finish out of three since the stadium move is hardly next level.

Spurs have had way more financial resources than us.
If i were Sullivan, i would say that 'next level' for west ham united is: sustained PL football (comfortably) breaking the transfer record a number of times 55k ST holders 8th highest wage bill 8th or 9th highest net spend over the past 5 years PL winning manager
this next level business is entirely subjective.

Goose: I get your reasoning, mate. I do accept that we're kind of on par for a club our size and the difficulty in breaking through to mix with the elite top six. Two considerations though: Spurs have done it over this decade, you could argue and - when we talk of the next level, it's the owners who sold us that line to buy us into their leadership.

2012 onwards has been 'ok' and roughly where we should be. 3 top ten finishes out of 7 and a lowest finish of 13th.
mistakes have been made for sure (ignoring the stadium) but we simply dont have the money to threaten the top 6, maybe even 7.
our fans keep throwing around 'next level' is embarrassing.

huge improvement on the previous decade and at a time when the money in the game has made the top 6 even less obtainable.
So Leicester's success was down to money?

Re: BBC League of the Decade

I think our league finishes over this period should be the main thing to look at.
2009-10 - 17th 2010-11 - 20th (relegated) 2011-12 - In Championship 2012-13 - 10th 2013-14 - 13th 2014-15 - 12th 2015-16 - 7th 2016-17 - 11th 2017-18 - 13th 2018-19 - 10th
So, two top ten finishes and bottom placed finish in those ten season. One top ten finish out of three since the stadium move. It's hardly 'next level'.

8th is about par for the course no? huge improvement on the previous decade and at a time when the money in the game has made the top 6 even less obtainable.

And misgivings aside about how the calculations have fallen still sobering reading. Not flattering at all - or would someone like to claim we've done ok since 2010?

Sheffield United also above Leicester, wo have actually won the PL tells you everything you need to know.
They have also only played 17 games in the PL in those 10 years, West Ham have played 339............

Re: BBC League of the Decade

The 10 year table is points per game in the Premier league, not a cumulative points table. The teams you mention have all played significantly less games in the Premier League than us, Sheffield United only 17 (i.e this season only!). We have been out of the Premier League only one season in the decade.
We are 14th in that table, but in the overall Premier League table sine inception, we are 10th.

how many of those years were we in the PL?
Its really only the past 4 or 5 year where we've been in a position of expecting top half finishes.
