This coronavirus in China - PL suspended until 1st June
anyone else worried? 9 dead so far.

CNY soon so the virus will spread very quickly if they cannot control it. It'll be in Europe by the end of CNY if not earlier.

is this the end of humanity?

The NHS coped in 2018, did it not? Don't think we lost any posters to 'flu that year.

YOU are human (I suspect) but I doubt if you are the same as a Thai ladyboy.

How many multi-year studies have been done to determine Covid-19 is a lot like the flu, Branded?

Mike

It’s a lot like Flu.

Some strains are more deadly and create big surges in hospitalisation like in 2018. We are now much more equipped to deal with the effects of this virus than we were but it’s still entirely possible that hospitals get to peak.

"So this holy grail vaccine "won't work" for people *REALLY* at risk. So what's the point of it?"

If you have a vaccine that prevents even a proportion of the population from being infected and therefore able to infect others, you will be able to allow a closer contact in restaurants, pubs, hotels, travel, events etc and therefore help the economy massively in many areas.

Also the people that may have previously been infected (and now aren't because they are vaccinated), will therefore be far less likely to infect at-risk people that they come into contact with, and therefore help reduce the potential burden on the NHS when those people need treatment.

But it's not like 'flu, is it?

The hospitalization requirement alone, for those it effects badly, is enough for society, as a whole, to try to manage it's eradication and a big part of that is to reduce it's transmission paths - at least until a functional vaccine arrives (WHEN that will be is the $64,000 question - many people's elephant in the room).

It seems many want a definite date for that moment, like a bank holiday, something they can plan for and against. Nature, of which we are still ALL a part, doesn't work that way.

Or, we accept it’s like the flu and get on with it.

Sir Alf.

Good post mate. The Mrs and me have tickets for a gig (DMA's) in October but i want it cancelled til next year if thats what it takes. I dont want to social distance at a gig,any semblance of intimacy will vanish thus destroying a huge part of what makes such occasions special.

A vaccine for productive people will allow the economy and most of normal life to resume.

So that they can pay taxes to support blimps and coffin dodgers.
That said a cull of fat people and the elderly will result in a massive boost to the economy.
Old age .... you can’t do anything about ... but being OBESE is curable.
Surely this news is a major motivating factor for tubsters.

On to VACCINES

https://nypost.com/2020/08/05/covid-19-vaccine-likely-wont-be-as-effective-in-obese-people-experts/

"“Will we have a COVID vaccine next year tailored to the obese? No way,” Raz Shaikh, an associate professor with the University of North Carolina’s nutrition department, told the outlet.

“Will it still work in the obese?” he asked. “Our prediction is no.”"

So this holy grail vaccine "won't work" for people *REALLY* at risk. So what's the point of it?

Can bet its the same for old age.

This isn't even anti-vax talk. I'm all for vaccines. But a vaccine for a virus that is major risk to the elderly and obese, that doesn't work on elderly and obese?

Sir Alf 12:59 Fri Aug 7

Agree with all that.

Plus who'd open a business now? Put your heart and soul and life savings into a cafe or bar that the state can just shut down whenever they want.

The vitamin D stuff means logically rates of infection will increase going into winter and this will give the government the excuse they need to put the country on the naughty step again.

Its fuck all about public health. Its about being able to micro manage our behaviour. And while there's idiots like that fat weirdo with the blue beard about they'll have no problem having rules enforcing.

Most coronaviruses?

The ones that don't do much to us, do come back time and time again.

The previous ones that seriously fuck us up have (mostly) gone away (SARS, MERS).

Not sure there's much cause for either pessimism or optimism. We mostly (still) don't know.

Based on my current visit to Cornwall , pubs and restaurants will be gone en masse within the next few years if social distancing and all these Safety procedures remain in place.

Spontaneity is a big thing part of going out but more importantly the need for atmosphere is critical. It’s what makes a good night out. You need groups of people in bars and pubs, music and singing etc. Restaurants and clubs too

Currently it’s relying on warmer weather for a drink outside for Larger groups of people. That won’t be possible in a month.

Assuming the virus will be like most coronaviruses and return most years and vaccines will only be 40 - 60% effective? Our community based pubs and festivals and other places like sporting venues are all facing large scale extinction if things are not relaxed within the next 12 to 18 months I would think?

What nightingale hospital is that?

The guy doing the video must be stupid if he thinks it was a waste of money.

How does he know wasn’t used?

Has he paid for it?

It was a back up plan which thank god was not needed as much as feared.

I would rather it was built and not overused than the other way around. Actually creating them in such a short space of time was remarkable .

I know for a fact the Excel was very much used during the first phase.

Re: This coronavirus in China - PL suspended until 1st June
When the Nightingale at the ExCel Centre was operational, it was taking the overspill from London hospitals that had reached their ITU bed capacity.

Every patient that was admitted needed ventilation, something they would not have received at the hospitals they were transferred from. An example was Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow which reached 100% of its capacity for high dependency patients quite early on.

These patients would all have died had they not been sent elsewhere for ventilation.

As nobody knew what the overall need would be for these beds at that time, it made sense for there to be one large place where all these overspill patients could be transferred, rather than sending them to an existing hospital which they may have needed transferring again if the bed situation became critical there too.

Branded made a friend. His friend believed that the wireless signals were killing us. His friend believed that all this was plotted 160 years ago and that the sealed agreement was stored in the temple of doom for future Governments to find. His friend didn't storm the Beach at Normandy, rather he stormed a local in-patient ENT clinic to prove it was empty.

Branded agreed with his friend, 85%.

The third chuckle came along and posted something from the Mail and agreed drinking in the rain was being adaptive and very British.
