Robbie Rensenbrink R.I.P.
I’ve just noticed that Robbie Rensenbrink, the great Anderlecht and Holland player, passed away on January 24th, aged 73.

He and Van Der Elst tore us to pieces during the ECWC final at Heysel in 1976. When we signed Van Der Elst a few years later I always wished that we had bought Rensenbrink instead.

There are clips from the ECWC final in this link:

It’s strange bearing in mind how the Dutch like to play football which is similar to ours that we hardly ever sign their players!!! The only one in recent times was booger’s!!

I remember watching the match highlights on Sportsnight. Just our luck to be playing them in Brussels and yet we still gave them a great game.

We were 2-1 up coming up to half time when Lampard got his studs caught in the ground making a simple back pass. He gave the ball away, they equalised and he injured himself in the process!

Rensenbrink went on to have a great World Cup in 1978, helping the Dutch knock out poor old Scotland in the group stage.

RIP Robbie

A tournament without a good Dutch team is only half a tournament, sadly the Dutch, with a few exceptions,. don't produce that many great players now days

I remember reading your work, refreshed so many memories. Being there as a 15 year old is still one of the best experiences iv'e had despite the result. A massive thrill seeing so mych claret n blue in a olace which seemed very far from home back then.

That whole generation of Dutch players from the 60's - 80's were different fucking gravy.

We will never see the like again...I consider myself very fortunate

I compiled an article on this forum a few years ago about my experiences at Heysel in 1976. Like many on here I noticed that the stadium was a crumbling wreck even seven or eight years before the tragedy.

However, it was a brilliant experience, despite the result, and we could have easily won it, except for the talents of Rensenbrink, and to a lesser extent, Haan and Van Der Elst.

That 1974 Dutch team are remembered more fondly than a lot of teams that WON the World Cup.
Like the 1982 Brazil team.

Of those Dutch teams I always remember and enjoyed watching Johnny Rep, I think it was the 78 team though as I was too young for the ‘74 WC.

One iron.

I was there as a 15 year old and i'll always remember how you and all the other older fans kept an eye on any kids such as me.

My old man convinced my Mum to let me go,his main reasoning was that all the youngsters would be looked after. He also told her that if she said no i would only tell her i'm popping out to see my mates and then she wodnt see me fot two days as i would just go anyway. He got that dead right.

Strange when i think back, she had no problems letting me go to Leeds or Chelsea but needed convincing to allow me to go to Brussels.

Me and five mates went to Brussels for a week in a hired Transit campervan.
Hired it from a garage in Canning Town we told the bloke we were going to Cornwall on a fishing holiday.
We ended up parking the thing right by them globes at the world's fair.
Great days even then Heysel was falling apart.
