Weekend football
With new arrangements for a winter break, both days have significance for us. Is it too much to hope that we can pull something out of the bag at the Etihad? Yes. But we can hope that others start doing us some favours.

SATURDAY

EVERTON vs CRYSTAL PALACE (1230 ko)
Despite an upwardly mobile season to date, Palace have slipped disturbingly down the table. Excellent. Long may such slippage continue. To be assisted today by a resurgent Everton who have been doing just what their owners intended when they appointed Carlo Ancelotti. Home win.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs WATFORD (1730 ko)
Speaking of slippage, Brighton are two points ahead of us and will correctly regard this as a must win six-pointer. Watford are one point behind us, with an inferior goal difference that may or may not last until tomorrow evening. For us, I suppose a draw would be best. One less point in the overall relegation mix. Draw.

SUNDAY

SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BOURNEMOUTH (1400 ko)
The Cherries will be bolstered by back-to-back wins, while the Blades have the incentive of finishing the weekend in the top five. Home win

MANCHESTER CITY vs WEST HAM UNITED (1630 ko).
Abandon hope, all ye in claret and blue. Home annihilation.

Haven’t seen the game but Sheffield United have done the business for us here.
And knocked Spurs out of a European place.
If not for Klopp Chris Wilder would be a shoo-in for manager for the year.
Actually for points per cost of squad he is probably well ahead.

That I find myself sitting here having to root for Sheffield United leaves a bad taste. What we have been reduced to.
