Indeed he was, Norman.
The problem was that I tried to emulate him in many ways during my younger days and was an utter cunt myself.
Luckily, I realised this by the time I had kids so equipped them with the streetwise shit but did my best not to pass on the darker stuff. It seems to have worked, fortunately.

I didn't realise it at the time but the abandonment at 4 and then the death at ten of my dad.
He was a hero to me until I slowly over the years found out what he was truly like.
He used to do lorry jackings for the Krays and my mother tells me that I met their mother when he was called to their house. I was immensely proud of that for years, and still am in some strange way but the fact of it is he was an absolute cunt of a human being.
He beat my mother, fucked and impregnated her sister (my 'cousin' still doesn't know that she's my sister), gambled, lied, cheated - so many stories, none of them heartwarming. His kids lived in poverty whilst he fucked off and lived the life of Riley. He died from a heart condition when he was 39. If that was today he'd be an outpatient and cured.
Though it's only recently that I've realised how much I've been affected, all through my life, by my upbringing.
Okay, maybe a time to visit the Anxiety/Depression thread.
Thanks Leonard!
And then there's the 2006 FA cup final.
Tough one.

My Nan’s death when I was 11 or so.
But like grumps I’m a bit of an emotional retard and just let things wash over me.

Worse than finding my dad cold and 911 telling me to try whatever was the look on my mom's face when I told her.
Condolences to those that have lost kids.

Aside from the parents passing away, as they were both passing (cancer at the same time), my mother asked for help as my dad had been very sick (chemo) and she wasn't physically strong enough to clean it all up and move him properly back to the bed. My parents were old school and never wanted to burden any of the children ever. Cancer was just a flesh wound as far as they were concerned. So when a call came for help I knew things must have been really bad.
I was an hour away and when I got there my mum was sitting downstairs and looked in a right mess emotionally. She had COPD as well as cancer and was almost on the oxygen so really could get around at all. I went upstairs and my dad was in bed out for the count. Amazingly she had cleaned most of it up, not easy for someone that couldn't walk around anymore without getting completely out of breath. To this day I have no idea how she made it up the stairs and got him back into his bed from the bathroom the cleaned much of the mess up.
I'll never forget my dad waking up as I cleaned upstairs and the first thing he said to me was 'what are you doing here, it's West ham's last game at home at Upton park and you have tickets?'
My dad loved my mum, football and us children, probably in that order. :-)
That was probably the worst day of my life (,above their passing) because it was the first time thst the strongest people I knew in my life needed my help. I'd only ever known it to be the other way around.
They passed away within 8 weeks of each other after plus 50 years of being married.

I'm in the bath.
My big sister, who died 12 years ago, comes in to the room to tell me that my big brother had died and, despite my protestations at the news, wasn't ever coming back.
Reckon half the water in the bath was my tears by the time I got out.
Once every 10 years or so I seem to have a massive SOB about it all.
Life, it's a load of bollocks really.

Always felt the shite things in life were worse for others than me, though I'm an odd fucker emotionally and am never sad.
Day mcavennie scored a hatrick in his last game for us, got home to loads of police round our house. Uncle and cousin had been missing for a while and after a tip off, their dismembered bodies had been found that day and they were breaking the news to my parents.
Completely destroyed my dad who's brother ot was and 28 years on, all back for him with the fella up for parole.
Girl I was seeing (friends sister) died in a car crash as well. Awful for my mate and his family, especially as his wife was in labour at the time with their first child and so he couldnt tell her as he didnt want to upset her.
Worlds a fucker and there are always people worse off.

Apart from my parents passing away, like you I tried to revive a woman with mouth to mouth while her family were standing above me pleading with me to help her. I can still see her eyes looking into mine even after 25 years.

Probably the day I tried to kill myself. To be that low as to want to do that was truly awful. Just wanted it over.
Anyway....

My Mums death. My Dad has Alzheimer's and whilst I sat beside my Mum with him waiting for her to be taken away for a couple of hours in a nursing room his condition meant that he couldn't take in that she was dead, so I had to explain it to him lots of times and each time it was like him learning for the first time again.
When he couldn't take in she was dead he was trying to wake her up and then when he did 'understand' that she was dead he was trying to take her ring off in case anybody else dare take it.
That was the longest couple hours of my life
