Other songs West Ham have run out to..
Hi everyone,

I hope this okay to post here - moderators please move/delete as necessary..

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years. We have a few questions that we hope you may be able to answer regarding the music West Ham have used.

I understand West Ham have been coming out to the current version of 'Bubbles' since around 1975 or so. Is that correct?

Does anyone know of any matches where a different track was used? And if so, can you rememebr what season?

And I've heard that before that version was recorded by the 1975 Cup squad, the players used to run out to Post Horn Gallop before a fan-led rendition of bubbles?

And if you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that i on the tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the project. Thank you very much for your help here.

Regards

Joe Headland

Thank you for commenting and sharing your memories (and for not giving me too much stick!). It's much appreciated and is invaluable to the project.

We're still on the lookout for songs, so if anyone remembers anymore, or can confirm other suggestions, drop us a line.

If you remember roughly what season even better!
Cheers,
Joe

I agree with you about the singing of Bubbles these days. Back in the 60's it was sung with the right timing (much too fast these days).
But my memory of the swaying was chiefly of the old Chicken Run pre-'69. No matter how big or small the crowd the Run was always packed so when they got going the swaying was truly impressive as it stretched from one end to the other.

I'd be very happy to see the Post Horn gallop reinstated though and stop playing that horrible version of Bubbles

There have of course been plenty of occasions when, regardless of the music, we have failed to run out and face it...

Didn’t we once come out doing the hokey cokey?

Be very careful of disinformation here.

If a poster called blueeyedhansomeman says we came out in 1902 to "We love you Arsenal, we do", disregard.

I seem to recall us running out for evening games back in the 80s to We Will Rock You (drum intro then segued straight into the guitar riff / bridge)?

Anybody else recall this, or is my brain playing tricks on me..?

Yep. That was definitely a regular thing.

Used to piss me off because it reminded me of virtually every company conference I've been to for about the last ten years.

During my time from the early 70’s, I remember Bill Remfrey playing the Post Horn Gallop and also National Shinguard’s version of Bubbles.

The 1975 cup final version wasn’t played regularly, I believe, until the mid to late 80’s onwards after some sort of supporter survey was conducted.

Also during the early 70’s, the pre match music was carried out by the Salvation Army, or whatever it was, band when they played their own version of Bubbles, mixed in with ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’

The Prokofiev theme, I recall, was played during the late 90’s, early 00’s during the Redknapp/DiCanio era, before the team came out to Bubbles.

For a time at the old place Battle Without Honor Or Humanity by Tomoyasu Hotei was played just before Bubbles.

Also known as the "Lucy Liu and friends walk towards the camera in Kill Bill Vol 1" tune.

For what its worth. In the 1950/60s the Hammers always ran out to the Post Horn Gallop.

The Band was The Leyton Silver Band and they a proper post horn and someone who could play.

When the Leyton Silver Band was replaced by The Royal Legion Band ( in 70s) there's was a downgraded post horn ( more like a hunting horn) which was never as good.

Think this may have contributed to the adoption of Bubbles as the tune to run out to.

Prior to this in the 1950s especially Bubbles was reserved for singing when the team was winning and playing well. The singing was accompanied by the North and South banks swaying in time.

Today's version of Bubbles is a poor imitation and is more ritualistic than a celebration

"Didn't we walk out to kashmir"?

And it was quicker than dressing room to pitchside at the OS.

Didn’t they used to play Right Here Right Now by Fatboy Slim before Bubbles for a while?

Yeah proper did. Swear that started when i was in primary school (before 1998) and was still happening until i stopped going to games as much (2009ish). Any idea when/if they stopped doing it?

Take it it doesn't happen at the LS?

Also heard the thing about us copying Sunderland.

Just before bubbles played, Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights was played.

Not sure if this is still the case at the LS but was a thing for at least a decade at Upton Park.
