Verdict: Should West Ham sign Matheus Pereira?

by Danny Lewis

West Ham United are showing an interest in signing Matheus Pereira during the summer transfer window, as reported by Football Insider.

The Brazilian has been spending the current season on loan at West Bromwich Albion from Sporting CP, and the Baggies have an obligation to make the deal permanent for over £8m when that spell comes to an end.

Even if it wasn’t set in stone, the Baggies would likely be delighted to take him for that figure, seeing as he has contributed six goals and 12 assists this campaign, helping them to their current position of second in the Championship table.

It is probable that West Ham will need to pay more if they were to bring him in, while they would also need to find space for him in the team – as they already have creative talents such as Pablo Fornals, Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini within their ranks.

Considering all of the above, FFC writers have given their verdicts on whether Pereira would make a good signing for the Hammers.

Matt Dawson

“A potential swoop for Pereira would be outstanding business from David Gold and David Sullivan. The Brazilian has been a bustling energetic ball of fun in the Championship, registering a league-high 12 assists and also netting six goals. Most importantly, that shows he’s already accommodated to the English game. There may be doubts over whether he can perform at Premier League level but this is a player who is still only 23 and has already played in Germany’s Bundesliga for Nurnberg.

“The Hammers may possess a plethora of creative talents such as Fornals, Lanzini and Anderson, but none have amassed numbers quite like the Brazilian’s. Pereira has registered 2.5 key passes in the second tier this term, but none of the Irons trio have even surpassed two per match. Just imagine him and Bowen causing chaos next season. It’s a mouthwatering thought.”

Harry Sherlock

“Pereira looks great and he would also potentially be linking up with Grady Diangana next season, who has spent the season on loan at West Brom as well.

“Of course, it may come down to whether or not the Baggies are promoted but to have 12 Championship assists points to just how gifted a playmaker Pereira is. He’d be a phenomenal acquisition, low-cost, and would genuinely improve the squad.

“West Ham should pull out all the stops to get this deal done and chairmen Gold and Sullivan would surely quell some fan anger if they managed to get him through the door.”

Kealan Hughes

“The fact that West Brom fans are desperate to keep him tells you everything you need to know, and since they’re likely to be in the Premier League next season it shows the Brazilian will be able to make the step-up.

“The only concern I’d have is whether West Ham would be able to get the best out of him, as we have seen Anderson decline this season and Fornals has only shown his quality in small parts – such as his goal at Anfield.

“That pair have three league goals between them but it appears the owners are now taking a different approach in the transfer market. The addition of Jarrod Bowen already looks a positive and Pereira would be similar given where he is currently playing.

“As a result, this could be another chance for GSB to make amends, and if David Moyes plays to his strengths next year he could make a huge difference.”

Danny Lewis

“Considering how effective he has been this campaign, as well as the fact that he is still just 23 years old, West Ham should definitely be looking to sign Pereira.

“Lanzini has been appalling this season, failing to score in any of his 12 Premier League starts or seven substitute appearances. With this in mind, if the Hammers were able to offload the Argentinian and bring in the West Brom loanee, it would be a definite upgrade.

“West Ham need to be looking to build an exciting team of players who are on an upward trajectory and despite their problems, the January signings of Tomas Soucek and Bowen showed signs of that – bringing in Pereira as well would be an encouraging continuation of this policy.”
