Most devastating sporting upsets of all time?
What's yours and why?

Top 3 for me:
Mike Tyson v Buster Douglas

I was young, just never even thought it could happen. He was the best boxer I had ever seen.. looking back it was on the cards, but this was Iron Mike Tyson .. mad

Man Utd v Arsenal 8-2

Just the hilarity of it all.. With a bunch of gooner maters watching the in the pub. I felt they all needed counselling! Never seen anything like it.

Brazil vs Germany World Cup 2014

This was surreal.
Just devastating. A loss is one thing. I complete destruction of the most popular footballing nation on earth.. mad

(I'd also like to add Brazil vs Italy in 82 as the Italians beat my favourite football team of all time... just gutting)

Most recent one has to be Joshua vs Andy Ruiz (1st fight)

Don Fox has to be the most devastated and upset of all time. He never fully got over the disappointment of missing the winning last kick oconversion under the posts in the 1968 Rugby League Cup Finsl
I was only 7 at the time and there was practically never any live sport on TV in those days.
The thing I remember clearly and never seems to get a mention was the amazing try Wakefield scored ftom the kick off on a waterlogged pitch. If you haven't seen the finale you're in for a treat: https://youtu.be/2ffVOIoJ1eI

Mace, from a snooker perspective I was a massive Jimmy White fan and me and my mate were watching it together the year he went 14-8 up against his nemesis Hendry. We were both sick as Hendry then reeled off 10 frames on the spin to beat him 18-14. Just as sickening as his 18-17 defeat too.

England walked off The Oval in late August 2013 having won the Ashes 3-0 and then headed to Australia with their leading scorer of all time and two leading wicket takers of all time.
By the first week of January 2014 they had lost the Ashes 5-0

Tyson losing to Douglas was the biggest WOW !! for me.

Dennis Taylor beating Steve Davis from something like 7-0 down. I was a Davis-hater and it was edge of the seat stuff at the time into the early hours. Taylor was a bit of a hero for me off the back of that. He's done it to death since though the tedious cunt and i now wish Davis had done him 18-0

Has anyone mentioned a global pandemic stopping all sport and delaying the Olympics for at least a year yet?

Think you'll find the All Blacks have been defeated 4 times by Welsh provincial teams and also lost to a North Counties team led by Bill Beaumont.

England winning 5 - 1, away in Germany 2001. Who in the hell expected that?

Headingley last year. Bowled out for 67. Chasing 360 odd to win. 286 - 9. game over. To win match from that position, with England's highest ever 4th innings chase. Amazing.

Headingly 81 will always get a mention whenever this topic comes up. Australia simply had no right not winning that test match frim the position they were in after tea on that Monday evening.

Me and a mate watched that last session locked in an off lisence on the Isle of Dogs. The Indian owner was a cricket nut and always chatted to us for ages whenever we popped in. Got in there after work to grab a couple if cans and he just said fuck it,i'm closing and we went out the back to watch his little black n white tele.

And no you cunts,we wernt being groomed and no molestation took place!

By mid 70s, Nottingham Forest were an average 2nd Division side...

Jan 75, Brian Clough becomes manager...

1977 - Promotion to Div 1
1978 - Div 1 Champions, League cup winners
1979 - European champions, Uefa Super cup winners, Div 1 runners up, League cup winners
1980 - European champions

To go from where they did in 5 years. Absolutely incredible.

Leicester City winning the Premier League is the greatest sporting achievement there has ever been, and ever will be.

Re: Most devastating sporting upsets of all time?
fraser, and tht is maybe why Austrlia is the most succesfull sporting country on the plenet (on a per capita basis)

It does wind me up a bit and a bit sickening, but on the other hand pity England/UK dont give there sports men and woman the same treatment! Maybe be a better sporting nation if we did perhaps?

Manuel.. Nope I always expect England and West Ham to fuck it up.. Has nothing to do with living in Oz.. They're brought up to expect Australia to win everything and that everything Australian is best.

Another phrase now used in Aussie vernacular is to do a "B&Q"

Even has his own slang term now, "done a Bradbury". Great story that.

Another name now used in Aussie vernacular is "Hopoate", but for a completely different reason!

Re: Most devastating sporting upsets of all time?
The Aussie Speed Skater Steven Bradbury in the 2002 Olympics is a huge shout, basically scraped into the final to make up the numbers, on the final turn with the Aussie way off the pace and last, the Chinese skater clips the yank and it brings down the whole field, except the bloke coming a distant last, he sails past them all to win gold.

Still known as the most unexpected Gold Medel in Olympic History.

Enjoy
