Question: Cost of manufacture of a car
If for example a VW E Golf is 27 k in the showroom, how much roughly would you think the cost of manufacture of this car actually is , parts labour etc. Does anyone know the actual breakdown for any other vehicle, someone who works in the motor industry? if not an educated guess. But Im particularly interested in the E Golfs figure , Im thinking 60% of the sale price, is it more or less?

I used to trade bonds and remember being told that at GM the costs of retired employees medical cover was higher per car than the total labour costs for a Hyundai

I bought 3 tyres for £328.00 and a front light bulb for £7.99 so if anyone can add costs per item we could eventually end up with a total cost

Re: Question: Cost of manufacture of a car
I used to do a lot of work for Ford, sometimes at their little research workshop in Aveley. There was once a Capri outside the workshop that had got lost in the system, had no paperwork and therefore officially didn’t exist. A technician took it apart bit by bit, smuggled the parts past security in his boot and reassembled it at home. Happy days.

Do what Johnny Cash did when he worked for Ford, steal one piece at a time :-)

If you are talking about the UK, don't forget in a say £24,000 on the road price, there is £4,000 of VAT, at 20%.

USA pricing

How much does it cost to make a car? It’s not possible to get an exact figure. According to the 2012 study Automobile Industry Retail Price Equivalent and Indirect Cost Multipliers, the breakdown of the production cost of a car is:

Raw materials and the prices of auto parts – 57% of the total price
Research, development, engineering, and running the facilities – 16%
Average advertising charges for each sold unit – $1,091
Average dealership markups per unit – $1,497
Estimated sales tax for each car – $4,984
