Incredible when we think back how managers just tried to shoehorn the "best" players into a team. People comment consistently on say Gerrard/Lampard not being able to play together but sometimes forget Paul Scholes was part of that midfield then stuck out on the left wing.

If Rooney had stayed fit then suspect England would have won in 2004.

Shame Euro 2020 isn’t starting this week as it was shaping as a very open tournament with several potential winners

No team is amazing all the way through a World Cup.
But you’re right about the games England were poor in.

Best England team I’ve seen was the Euros in Portugal. Rooney had just burst on the scene and was a real handful.

Re: England v Scotland Euro 96
Absolutely Sven

We just beat teams we should be beating in 2018 and then bottled it/carried on playing players on reputation instead of form (alli, sterling)

It was the same in italia 90 too. France 98 we actually looked half decent, especially with everyone terrified of Owen. Nobody outside england gave us a chance in hell against Argentina, that game we really didn’t deserve to lose.

2002 was our best chance at a World Cup but (no offence) we had a hugely overrated manager who didn’t know what to do with the players he had. He repeated that trick in 2004 too, although it took Portugal breaking Rooney that time and then getting him sent off two years later to knock us out

We sort of rose tint a lot of tournaments really, when in fact there’s not many where we consistently look decent and/or solid over the course of all the games. It’s not unusual for a team to underperform, it happens at every tournament, but we do it at every bloody one of them!

You could say the same about 2018
England weren’t terribly convincing in most games and the draw helped them.
Probably played best in the first hour v Croatia but then managed to seize up and throw it away after Harry Kane blew a simple chance to finish it.

It’s amazing really how history and hysteria alter the realities of England at tournaments

Euro 96 was strange really. Before the tournament, there was huge excitement in the build up but massive negativity around the team. Venables and his ‘Christmas tree’
Formation hadn’t clicked, shearer wasn’t scoring, we lost to the USA. It didn’t look good

And in reality, we were actually pretty shoddy in the tournament itself. Against Switzerland we took the one chance we created but were largely rubbish. Perhaps the equaliser was a little harsh but you couldn’t say we deserved to win.

It’s easy to forget Scotland actually had a decent team at the time, and we were second best for most of the game against them too. Absolutely woeful in the first half, we scored with our first chance, but were still second best and were very lucky the penalty miss/Gaza’s genius happened in quick succession. Had mcallister scored, I reckon we’d have lost

The Holland game was remarkable, not least because we didn’t necessarily play THAT well but that every time we did something decent, we scored. We still let them in for a crappy consolation that knocked Scotland out though!

We were terrible against Spain and should have lost

Much like Italia 90, the only game we were good in was the semi final against Germany which we should have won and messed up

It lives long in the memory as a balmy summer where shearer clicked, the nation got behind a team that messed up euro 92 and missed USA 94 and came so close but we really weren’t very good

England were awful in the first half, and weren’t exactly great in the second half.

Always thought there was a bigger gap between the Scotch penalty andGazza scoring mind you, so that was a genuine surprise when re-watching that.

Did the Holland game a last week on ITV4 - was at that, so first time I’d ever seen that all the way through on TV. Gary Neville was world class that day

If your talking about Stuart Pearce and Euro 96, the only thing that comes into my head is THAT penalty against Spain. I know one players peformance should not rest on one kick but his reaction afterwards is pure emotion and passion.

If anyone told me that "it's only a game" I used to tell them to watch that clip. Sadly I now reply "no, it's a business".

Watched the German game and I thought Pearce was poor in possession, thought the same watching that Scotland game.
Unpopular opinion I’m sure.

Who did Redknapp replace when he came on?

Thought I heard something yesterday that they were planning to sub Gascoigne if McAllisters pen had gone in.
Of course URI GELLER reckons his concentration caused the ball to wobble slightly on the spot as the penalty was taken.

I rewatched this on ITV Hub.I was never a fan of rewatching whole games until lockdown but when i gave it a try starting with the last game at The Boleyn I now enjoy it. It is difficult to appreciate watching it live when you care passionatley about one of the teams involved, watching it back gives you more perspective.

Agree with the comment about Redknapp, he changed the game. Those few minutes of the penalty save then Gazza's goal were brilliant but overall the game was poor.

I did watch the Holland game again and really enjoyed it, some of the football that night was quite superb.

Used to to love the England V Scotland games and the home nations no loved loss and all four countries had well known players because our leagues weren't flooded with foreigners !!!
Some crunching tackles going in too !!! Love it.

I was there, right in line with Gazza when he picked the ball up to score that goal.

Remember the game being quite poor

Re: England v Scotland Euro 96
Rewatched it on ITV a few weeks ago. Forgot that Gazza was awful in the first half, but it is largely remembered as his match for the brilliance of the second goal.
