Katherine Road
Pronunciation, my aunt lived on Outram Road and always pronounced Katherine as Kathryne..met a fellow hammer in Greece and he had it the same. Bloke in my local insists it's Kathrin..am I gonna lose this argument?

It's not named after a 'beacon tree' it's named after the tree that belonged to some Saxon bloke called Behca (or something). Hence the confusion. I think. Maybe.

Re: Katherine Road
CBE

Given the neighbouring, Boleyn Road, Seymour Road, Cleeves Road, Parr Road and Aragon Road, I'd say it's likely it was named after Katherine Howard.

Yes, It's a local mispronounciation that's stuck.

It's likely it was named after a person. And I doubt anyone in the world calls themselves Kath-rine. It's just a local mispronunciation that has stuck.

Re: Katherine Road
Always called it Cafe-rin (same as the girls name).
And called it Beckontree.
(That’s where some of the corn beef city ‘snobs‘ used to say they were from).

Mind you, me old man still calls his old manor ‘Baffnal Green’ for some reason. He’s 90 so we’ll let him off!

Linkslink - (haha). Jamaica street was our manor so just said it how it is really.

The correct way BEAKontree

BEContree is for, toffs and posh people

Re: Katherine Road
The locals rhyme it with fine, so that's what it is.

Fuck knows why though.

Becontree

BEcontree as is beacon? This seems to be favourite amongst people who live there but seems totally fucked up if you ask me.

I'm sticking with Becontree as in (Tooting) Bec or David Beckham

How long before the inhabitants of Cholmondley stop saying "Chumley"?

Re: Katherine Road
Things change. Proper locals always used to say Rumford for Romford, and I had the piss taken out of me by non-Romfordians for doing so.

Now you'd find it difficult to find anyone (apart from me) who says Rumford.
