Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car turns down chance to join West Ham

Marseille centre-back wants to play in Champions League
Hammers have already failed in several bids for defenders

Jacob Steinberg

West Ham’s search for a new centre-back has suffered another blow after they were turned down by Duje Caleta-Car, who wants to stay at Marseille and play in the Champions League.

David Moyes is keen to strengthen his defence before the transfer window shuts on Monday night and was hopeful of signing Caleta-Car for around £20m. However, the 24-year-old Croatia centre-back has left West Ham disappointed after indicating that he has no desire to leave Marseille, who have been drawn in a Champions League group with Manchester City, Olympiakos and Porto.

West Ham have been struggling to sign a central defender. Under pressure to reinvest the money received from Grady Diangana’s £18m sale to West Brom, they have already failed with bids for Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic. Another target, Wesley Fofana, has joined Leicester from St-Étienne.

The snub from Caleta-Car, who has impressed since joining Marseille from Red Bull Salzburg in 2018, could lead to West Ham turning to a cheaper option. Craig Dawson, relegated with Watford last season, could potentially join on loan. West Ham have also considered moves for Arsenal’s Calum Chambers on loan and Swansea’s Joe Rodon.

West Ham did manage to bring in a right-back when they signed Vladimi Coufal from Slavia Prague on Monday. The Czech Republic international joined for £5.4m and is in the squad to face Leicester on Sunday.

West Ham lead race for £25m-rated Jonathan Tah

By Jordan Harris

West Ham United fans have had little to smile about in this window, but perhaps there is now reason for optimism with the Sunday Mirror (4/10; page 73) reporting that the Irons lead the race to sign Jonathan Tah.

Tah looks to be one of the most promising centre-backs playing in Europe right now. And it now appears that he could be on the move in the final stages of the summer window.

West Ham have only managed to add one new face to their ranks in this window. But it seems that they are in a strong position to add a second.

According to the Sunday Mirror the Hammers are in pole position to sign Tah, who is valued at £25 million. It is claimed that they are doubling their efforts to get a deal done.

TBR View: West Ham cannot afford to miss out on Tah at this stage

If West Ham really are at the front of the queue to land Tah, the board surely cannot afford to miss out.

The relationship with the fans already appears to be incredibly strained. So it will only upset the supporters further if they fail to land Tah.

West Ham fans are under no illusions about how tough this season could prove to be, even after the 4-0 win over Wolves last weekend.

Signing Tah therefore, would be a fantastic statement that the club could really do with making.

Club reportedly willing to subsidise player’s salary amid West Ham and Southampton loan interest

West Ham United and Southampton have reportedly received a boost in their quest to sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

The Daily Mail reported on October 2 that West Ham are keen on signing the 24-year-old, with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard willing to let the midfielder leave on loan.

The Sun has now reported that Chelsea are prepared to pay £100,000-a-week of his £173,000-a-week salary for this season as part of any loan deal.

The report in the British tabloid has claimed that Southampton are also interested in securing the services of the England international.

Good signing for West Ham United or Southampton?

With Chelsea having a very strong midfield department, Loftus-Cheek will struggle for regular playing time at the Blues this season.

Both West Ham and Southampton are big clubs, and the London outfit and the Saints could do with a dynamic box-to-box midfielder such as the England international.

If Chelsea are willing to pay part of his salary during his loan spell, then the Hammers and the Saints should really look into it.

Loftus Cheek is on £173,000 a week?

What the fuck has he ever done or achieved to get anywhere near that sum?

Every day that passes non-league football seems to get more appealing
