The reason behind their no brown M&Ms rider is tragic.

Re: Eddie Van Halen Hovis
I remember Van Halen quite well. He was a diamond, an absolute gent.

We met back in the mid 80s. I was working for a music production company and we had been given a rather large budget for a charity concert – no not Live Aid, smaller scale and in NY. Bill Graham, the rock promoter, was trying to get folk like George Harrison, Paul Simon, and delegated to me some of the lesser acts. He said Get Me Van!

So, in those days all you needed were the right phone numbers. A few calls back and forth, a negotiation here and there, and we had them. Was much pleased. Informed Bill.

Ha, and then a few says later he shows me the poster publicity announcing a few acts and Van Morrison. I said oh good Van Morrison as well as Van Halen, and after a few seconds it sinks in that I have booked the wrong Van, he gives me that look that means my career aint lasting long with him.

Anyway saw out my remainding days dealing with the concert. Specifically removing brown m and ms as per Halen contract rider. Van Halen was terrific, and Eddie a real nice smart guy.

Bill Graham, still pissed at me, had a go at me in front of Eddie. Eddie took me under his wing and we departed out into the NY nightlife. Boy could he snort, and drink. Well, it gets hazy, but I vaguely remember we just checked into the Chelsea Hotel, att the morning. and I have memories of us singing a slow sweet Jump, a capella, as the sun rose in between the Twin Towers.

I get up and nothin gets me down
You got it tough, I've seen the toughest around
And I know, baby, just how you feel
You got to roll with the punches and get to what's real

Re: Eddie Van Halen Hovis
Eddie never got the credit he deserved for his rhythm playing, was always associated with the tapping and screaching fills, but was a great riffer and rhythm player.

Simon Wright tells the story of walking into the tuning room backstage at Monsters of Rock '84, and had walked in on Eddie and Angus Young exchanging wailing blues licks..........jeeez!!

Saw Van Halen as supporting act to Black Sabbath at Hammersmith Odeon in the mid 70's I guess. Seem to recall them doing a good version of "You Really Got Me" an old Kinks number. Up to that point I had never heard of them.

Re: Eddie Van Halen Hovis
Was looking at his obit on BBC yesterday and there was quite a good video on the tapping thing actually. He doesn't claim to have invented it. But there's a nice anecdote about it and some casually incredible shredding...

Absolutely! At least you know that you'll be able to more or less get through AC/DC or Angus stuff when you try, but EVH solos? Fuck that.... Just watching him do it makes it look so easy and effortless as well and some of the sounds he could make a guitar make were out of this world. Criminally talented, he was.

Spanish fly :-)

He loved his harmonics.

I just loved the Jacko story how he turned up at the session laid down laid down the solo. His then manager finds out and asks if got paid or signed anything, which he didn't, he just wanted to play couldn't be arsed with the business side.

Yup. Several claim to have used the technique pre-VH but one that definitely did (it's on film), is Steve Hackett on a few early Genesis songs such as the Fountain of Salmacis.

I'm not sure but I don't think Eddie invented tapping but he probably popularised it?

That sounds familiar.

I was about a year into learning how to play when Van Halen came out. I listened, put my jaw back in place and went straight back to learning some AC/DC tunes.

Hey ho.

" not in the same league as Gary Moore"

Oh, goodness dear Lord almighty. Are you on drugs?

Next up: Bobby Moore saw Christian Dailly as the player he aspired to be.
