I'm getting sick of seeing this self proclaimed child poverty expert spouting off all the time lately.

Here's an idea to those in poverty he "represents". If you can't afford to feed your kids DON'T FUCKING HAVE THEM.

Rant over.

Did it not strike you that prof was almost certainly lying?

Re: Marcus Rashford
I once had a political philosophy prof with a couple young children say:

"I would rather my kids be illiterate than learn to read using the Harry Potter books."

He got lots of gasps and I knew I would enjoy the class.

More seriously Harry Potter's adventures at what is a lot like Oxford seem fine though I never read them. On gut instinct I would think they seem even more so since Rowling has found religion and feels the need to revise them.

I guess it’s better than nothing if retarded adults are reading kiddies books
Same as watching kiddies films like Star Wars I suppose

Re: Marcus Rashford
As said I think the thing about ‘affording’ books is a bit of a red herring
I’m guessing kids don’t read because they don’t have the example from their parents or it’s not cool in a world of screens watching banal shit and general social media bollocks.
I think the Harry Potter books over the last few years have shown kids WILL read if engaged.

A professional footballer encouraging reading can help that and can only be a good thing.

Perhaps Rashfords next role could be to encourage kids to speak clearly , pull their trousers up and to not spit in the street

I did a masters program with a lot of library studies students. I am keenly aware.

You know a big reason why libraries have been closing?

Because of the availability of books on the internet, a massive amount of books are public domain, including a huge amount of children's classics.

Pretending that schools don't have libraries, if you have a computer or even a phone, you have something to read. Depends on your desire and ability not be distracted by videos and games.

"800 libraries closed since 2010...."

And probably replaced by the hundreds and hundreds of FREE phone box libraries that are pretty much everywhere now.

Re: Marcus Rashford
Marcus RASHFORD was 13 and very much in Manchester United's academy by that point. Pretty sure they can afford books. So pretty obvious that his social media retard ghost writer is talking about before that.

Want to have another go?

Re: Marcus Rashford
My kid comes home with a different book every week from their school library which we have to read with them and give a 1 or 2 sentence statement about what they have learnt.

Why can't this happen at every school? It doesn't cost a penny and only involves a parent putting in some effort.

Re: Marcus Rashford
The narrative about "affording" reading is a little silly

its more than a ittle silly, to be fair. One assumes that the social media retard who writes his posts has also never heard of a library.

Still, another good initiative from him. Well done.

Although the South Park episode 'Chicken Lover' most adequately describes my own feelings on it.

Re: Marcus Rashford
The book thing is extremely important and hats off to him for using his voice to encourage reading. The company he is partnering with gets something out of it and hopefully so will some kids.

The narrative about "affording" reading is a little silly but public figures say a lot of silly things. It is about the desire to read, which hopefully this will help.

What, you reckon he'll be speaking up on numeracy next?

All sounds a tad hysterical to me, mate.

Don't think this is really about racism.

Neither is this: anyone who tells Diane Abbot to fuck off is all right in my book. Good on ya, Jess Philips!

Marcus Rashford.

Helping feed deprived kids.

Encouraging youngsters to read books.

But most importantly inadvertently winding up the rednecks.
