Ithere's going to be a program on BBC2, Sunday 15th at 9 pm about the club, its origins and an insight into the iconic Jazz venue.
I met one of the people involved in making the program and from what he said it should be worrh watching...for BBC2 to pick it up. It should be good viewing.

Jazz clubs were never the same once they banned smoking. They smelled funny and atmosphere was diminished. Shame.

It was miles better than the Southampton jazz club I went to a few times.
Although the Soton club had bullet holes in the ceiling, put there by one of the madder musicians who had visited over the years. Forget which one.

I saw Sade do her first solo concert there one Sunday evening. In the audience was Spandau, Bowie, Strange, Boy George, Bob Elms...endless list of who's who of the early 80s.

IIRC the bloke I met who is one of the editors/producers said that they talk about having to change the music they showcase, modern day shitcunts into grime, pop etc won't appreciate Jazz/ Jazz Funk music so they have to change.
I know that Mi-Soul host some nights upstairs which are popular, I'm looking forward to the program next week.

It’s a good venue Eastside, upstairs for upmarket food and cocktails etc, looking down on the stage, downstairs more clubby. And the acts they get are very good generally.

Not done Ronnies yet but we go up to the Jazz Cafe quite a lot. Fuck the chin-stroking, there’s actually a major jazz/afrobeat/funk/electronica thing coming out of Deptford/Peckham last five years or so. Moses Boyd, Kokoroko, Nubya Garcia etc. well worth checking out.

Not judging them at all... it's still worth a visit...Just making the point that when things were a bit more run down and shabby it was more conducive to better music. Now everything is shiny but it's all a little sterile.
Which is Soho and London in general these days.

I grew up in Kennington so Soho was my local playground...and Camden when they were something else - before the gold rush.

I'm more a fan of Jazz Funk than the chin stroking stuff that came after the classic jazz of 50's/60's. I think of that as more like the worst examples of prog rock in a Jazz context.
I saw Loose Tubes there with Django Bates in the late 80's...they were bloody good, I tell thee.

I used to go every Christmas (most Christmases?) to see George Melly and John Chilton's Feetwarmers.
A massive old tart, but what an entertainer!
George was pretty good, too.
Other than that, I occasionally ended up there for that important final couple after ten hours solid on it.
