When I was in Italy in 2009, you could get cartons of red or white wine in cartons for a Euro, like you would for cartons of fruit juice. They weren’t too bad once they were chiled in the fridge (even the red).

The kind of wine that you get in a carafe in France or Spain is perfectly drinkable. It's new and fresh and ideal for eating with some food.

This is the kind that usually ends up in a box...the only difference being that the box is full of preservatives and the one in the bistro/taverna usually isn't.

Best wine I had in France was in Lyon...every place that did house wine it was spot on. Lovely jubbly.

This is the sum total of what the French know about wine:

Andre: ***drinks turps-like liquid***
Pierre: Do you like le vin nouveau from le local vineyard?
Andre: Oui, c'est manifique!
Jean: Anyone like a glass of Chateau Petrus?
Andre et Pierre: Pah! Is not local, we think.

Well as a French resident I can tell you that wine in a box is always going to be second rate. Sorry but as much as I enjoy many wines served this way the best always end up in bottles....

You can still get good wines in 3 or 5 litre boxes but hey! Would you put your best wines in 3 or 5 litre boxes or 75cl bottles? What would I know?.....

GOON

Contains fish guts, but exceedingly cheap to get smashed on.

Good times.
