The Sergeant Cribb books (Peter Lovesey) were a decent read and interesting with their setting in late nineteenth century London. With the TV series long gone getting copies of them has become more difficult but as they are now coming around to 50th Anniversaries they might come back into fashion.

Rockford Files.( you can't beat James Garner,one of the all time greats).

David Janssen was excellent as Harry O.
I think he died very young,didn't even make 50. Tired out looking for the one armed man.
