Crassus

Denilson was his name and he was bang average by Brazilian standards...which used to be quite high at the time.

Deportivo signed the mercurial but wayward genius Djalminha to replace Rivaldo and Betis thought this guy was just as good as him.

Epic fail

I remember when Betis somewhat improbably broke the world transfer record
Some Brazilian bloke who ended up not all that

Re: Barcelona, over 1 Billion Euros in debt!
I lived there 14 years and when I first arrived had quite a positive opinion of them. I even went to a 5 euro ticket match against a Greek side, which Barca won 2-0 featuring their best player at the time , Saviola.
However, it didn't take long for me to realise what an entitled , smug, self-satisfied, arrogant, whiney bunch of fans they really are. Every year I was there they improved and every year those wankers became more unbearable. I left 5 years ago, and its all gone tits up. Wish I was there to listen to their bleating these days. Theres only one West Ham in Spain and thats Betis!

If they fold, I suspect hoards of Catalans will descend on, and try to raze to the ground, Madrid.

They have Spain and the Spanish taxpayer over a barrel.

They'll get bailed by the state somehow. Too big to fail. They are a big draw for Spain's economy.

Real Madrid debt is about the same

be nice if it all collapsed in on them swiftly followed by the rest of the "European super league" chasers .

They will get bailed out, by hook or crook. And go back to their old ways once the world has gotten back to normal. And in five or ten years when they win another Champions League title. The pundits and media will be banging on how wonderful they are. And how they built this great legacy. The debt will be serviced. And the can. Kicked down the road.Like Messi being sold. No wants to take the responsibility for pulling the plug. That's the next person problem.

It’s a sorry state of affairs for them isn’t it?

Along with the debt, they don’t have an amazing squad any more - this is a team that not so long ago had messi, Henry and etoo up front, and now has martin braithwaite...

Spanish Football is rotten to the core and it's entirely the fault of the big two.

Sadly, there are a lot of good clubs in Spain trying to do the right thing but it's a thankless, impossible task when the example set from the top is absolute garbage.

With a debt that large they can just tell their creditors to swivel; they'll always get further credit - even if to simply keep servicing the debt - out of fear of them defaulting on the lot.

Owe a few hundred/thousand, they won't stop chasing you. Owe a 5, 6 or 7 figure sum and you start calling the tune.

Or at least the footballing equivalent.

This is not because of the virus, albeit more acute as a consequence
Facts are this is the culmination of ludicrous transfer deals and even wilder salaries - don't forget when you hear of the wages paid by Barca and Real they are net, so after tax, the club covers that
It's an interesting one, Real will never go pop as they are state backed, Barca covered historically by local wealth - who knows where in this economic climate where their benefactors lay?
Anyway, fuck them, bent as a five bob note and can't even raise the funds for Depay

Paying Messi £500,000 per week has no doubt contributed to this level of debt.

I'd be amazed if he stays there this summer.

It would certainly hinder their ability to service the debt but a billion Euros is such a ludicrously large number they must have been in deficit for years.

There comes a time when the figure is soo ridiculous and incomprehensible that you sort of think erm, well done, that's quite an impressive amount of money to squander, I couldn't begin to know I would accumulate so much debt.

Not sure this is going to be covered by sacking Dolores the tea lady and buying Tesco value churros for the players lounge.

Zeb, I reckon the global pandemic going on might have had something to do with it, don't you?

Depends how much of the debt, has been racked up in the last year.

Re: Barcelona, over 1 Billion Euros in debt!
No doubt some dodgy deal will see them right.

Like when the local authority bought Real Madrid's training ground for the same £150m that the club held as debt many years ago.

Spanish football is corrupt to its core.

Looks like they will do a Leeds or Portsmouth, well the Spanish equivalent

Re: Barcelona, over 1 Billion Euros in debt!
They done some insane deals in the last few years...
Coutinho for £100m or was it 120 or 140?
One of the Dembeles (a shit one) for £130m

Best bit was when they had to pay Liverpool some more when Coutinho on loan at Bayern popped in a couple of goals against them when they got dicked 8-2

Re: Barcelona, over 1 Billion Euros in debt!
They’ve been taking the piss kicking the van down the road for years with no effective oversight from the footballing authorities.

That being said, every few years there is a story like this where it is about to come crashing down and then the can kicks again until we end up back here with an even more ludicrous sum.

Got to come to an end soon though. A billion is no joke.
