Report suggests Edwards has fancied Issa Diop for years as Liverpool plot last-gasp move
Olly Dawes
According to Foot Mercato, Liverpool have been interested in signing West Ham United defender Issa Diop for many years.
Liverpool travel to face West Ham in the Premier League this afternoon, and will of course be hoping for three points in East London.
They could yet have a deal to strike with the Hammers though, as they’re keen to sign defender Diop before Monday’s transfer deadline.
It’s claimed that Liverpool are ‘digging’ for Diop, and whilst a deal is ‘complicated’, it’s far from impossible as West Ham would not be totally against a move.
Liverpool have followed Diop for ‘several seasons’ now, suggesting they have held a long-standing interest in signing the French centre back.
Intriguingly though, Inter Milan are also interested and are lurking in the shadows, meaning Liverpool could face a battle to sign Diop.
The Reds seemingly fancied Diop back in 2018, months before he joined West Ham, which would certainly add up to Michael Edwards being a long-term admirer.
The 24-year-old has only played four Premier League games this season and seems to be down David Moyes’ pecking order, meaning he could well fit as a short-term solution to Liverpool’s defensive woes.

West Ham to offer Liverpool alternative centre-back who may be more to Klopp’s liking
With a day left of the winter transfer window, Liverpool don’t have long to get a deal over the line for a stop-gap centre-back.
Jurgen Klopp will understand that to find a player that has experience, the right mix of ingredients to be a success at the highest level and be comfortable enough to slot straight in to the Reds’ back line, is a long shot.
However, Sunday’s opponents, West Ham United, could offer a potential solution.
Though the Daily Star note Liverpool’s apparent interest in the Hammers’ Issa Diop, it looks as if the east Londoners would prefer to offload 32-year-old Winston Reid instead.
Given Klopp’s current predicament, taking Reid could certainly solve his problems in the interim.
A short-term arrangement is likely to suit all parties, particularly given that Liverpool should have at least one, if not both of their first choice centre-back pairing on the pitch before the end of the campaign.
Reid won’t be overawed by the responsibility and, importantly, his hire would free Jordan Henderson to go back into midfield.
The deal is there to be done…
