Channel 4 have got to be fucked off with this given the money they spent on what they hoped would be 20 days of cricket.

Are you saying you don't think he's very good and needs shielding?

Clearly England's best batsman (then Stokes). You build a batting line up around where they feel comfortable and produce their best results. At 4 and 5.

His double hundred in this series, he came in at 63/ 2. His scores have got progressively worse as our ham fisted top 3 has spread panic. Are you saying you don't think he's very good and needs shielding?

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
I'm not overly interested in the career average at 3 v 4 as it lacks any of the context of the current or former situations.

When all his success this winter has come batting at 4? That seems fairly current.

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Stokes shouldn't be higher than 6.

Rubbish. Averages 46 at 5, 36 at 6. Scores centuries 50% less frequently batting at 6, rather than 5.

The thing I find really annoying about English batsmen, is the procession of players who come in, score centuries early on, then fall away, can't maintain their form and get dropped. Sibley, Crawley and Pope have all scored centuries in the last year or so, but don't seem capable now. Reminds me of Ballance, Jennings and Robson.

Must be a reason for this? Techniques not good enough, being worked out by the oppo, once they become "known" and their fault analysed and plans set?

Kane WILLIAMSON > Steve SMITH

I havent watched Kane WILLIAMSON for a while but noticed he filled his boots at HOME v the power of the Windies & Pakistan.
Good recovery from his trip to Australia .... 34 14 9 & 0
Sat out the Third Test as obviously his trajectory was taking him into negative scores.

CRAWLEY just has to bat 3
NO BRAINER
Except it seems for FUNKY Ed Smith , TINKERMAN Silverwood & Joe 'I was happy with our fight & grit' ROOT

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
No concerns about Pope for me. Like Bell, I'm sure he will figure out test cricket all over the world.

No major difference between Crawley opening and batting 3 really. He's opened for Kent for long enough. His international career has thus far mirrored his domestic career - averaging about 30 with innings of huge potential intermingled. Definitely something there but very much has the look of feast or famine at the moment and needs to figure out how to make tough runs. Stokes, Lawrence, buttler, Pope and foakes (and arguably bairstow) are then essentially competing for three spots at 5,6 &7. Given that one is guaranteed to be taken by stokes, rightly and buttler will be back at 7, it all sounds well stocked but there's too many to go into one spot.

Top 3 is a huge issue. For me, any combination of a top 6 you write out looks much better with root at 3. I'm not overly interested in the career average at 3 v 4 as it lacks any of the context of the current or former situations. Kane Williamson does it (which is why he's the best of the 'fab four ' by a distance ) so no reason root can't. Oh, and kane Williamson learned to bat in county cricket

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Stokes shouldn't be higher than 6.

The Kid would probably benefit from a spell at 5.

Pope either has to shape up and bat 3, or maybe not at all. Assuming he doesn't become the new 3 for whatever reason, that is the biggest problem for England, apart from their non functioning openers. So just 1, 2 and 3 to sort out.

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
LAWRENCE will be putting pressure on ERSTWHILE Golden Boy & Ian Bell impersonator OLIVER POPE.

BUTTLER will return and they should look at putting pressure on him to perform as a specialist batsman by retaining FOAKES as keeper
There are enough options to move past BAIRSTOW & CRAWLEY must bat 3.
BURNS will return to open & SIBLEY will have first go at partnering him

Burns Sibley Crawley Root Stokes Lawrence Buttler Pope Foakes .... enough options for a top 7
Leach as the spinner & Anderson Broad Archer Wood Stone Woakes for 3 fast bowling spots with Stokes in support.

I see it looks more likely the WTC final is moving from Lords to an out ground in Hampshire now that it lacks the glamour of Australia appearing. Expect tv coverage might also be in doubt.

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Only positives from this tour were:

Anderson
Root
Leach
Lawrence

Bairstow and Bess burg finished for a while at test level.

Major question marks in Sibley and Crawley.

Pope needs a good innings.

Burns lack of match practice.

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Think you can have a specialist batsman at 7 but only if the wicket keeper is in the top 6.
We had a batsman at 7 and wicket keeper at 8 in this test.

Specialist number 7 batsman - the future of the game. Previously made famous by JP Duminy amongst others.

Like the introduction of the Makelele role in football. This is a pioneering moment in the game.

Stewie

Not sure we have huge middle order options. Many are out of form.

Lawrence or Pope I guess. Shame as be good to get both on the team.
We will have Woakes or Curran back in the summer as extra all rounder .

In the meantime, the ECB needs to think through a longer-term plan for producing test-class batsmen and spinners.

Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Decent knock from Lawrence, showing some guts. Too little, too late. But showed application.

Sven’s right: it’s too late to worry about dusty spin tracks for a year or so. England have big tours to Oz and elsewhere in the next couple of years. They need to start preparing for those (harder, drier) pitches and conditions right now.

But they won’t. They’ll have a break, play a lot of white-ball cricket, play well at home on skiddy grass-tops where Jimmy and Broad will excel (they are very good at home, after all). Then they’ll turn up down under, under-prepared for what the Aussie pace attack will unleash.

What they probably need to do straight away is take Wood, Archer, Jamie Overton and Stone to one side and get them bowling with the Kook ball on dry, hard and fast surfaces.

Against some of our top six.

stewie griffin 12:44 Sat Mar 6
Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Jimmy has averaged about 10 this winter. Not sure why you'd want to leave that at home.

stewie griffin 12:43 Sat Mar 6
Re: England tour of India (Live on Channel 4)
Unfortunately for Lawrence, all he's done here and in his debut match in sri Lanka is prove what an absurd decision it was to have him bat at 3 in the other games, and in doing so he's just added his name to a middle order that already has too many options.

I hope he comes back to Essex and bats at 3 in the early part of the season as that's where the opportunity for him to nail down a spot is. Especially while other more vaunted players hide elsewhere despite what the team so obviously needs
