You obviously haven't visited Newcastle's twitter page. There's an absolute eulogy from Nigel Pearson and hundreds of replies singing Roerder's praises as player and manager

I must admit that at the time he was manager I did used to take the merciless piss out of him because he came across as quite humourless in his pre-match and post match conferences. As it turned out...he was anything but and I felt pretty bad for him when he got the brain tumour.
After Harry, Brian Blower and all his agent flunkies...Terry Brown just wanted an honest bloke who was as straight as a die and got on with it and Roeder was perfect.
A well regarded coach or assistant rarely cuts the mustard as the manager and that was his major downfall. Also I think he was a bit like Bonzo in the sense he couldn't understand why people who were being paid to play football could be so difficult to manage and unprofessional.

The year we went down I sent a letter to Roeder, yeah I was raging as a 13 year old now supporting a division 1 team but after hearing about his brain tumour it put it into perspective.
A few weeks later I receive a response from Glenn thanking me for the kind words and telling me to stick with the club etc
The next day a parcel was delivered in my name, opened it up and there is a signed team photo from everyone, defoe, Di canio, Carrick etc etc.
Another little letter from Glenn saying I hope you find a space for this.
Now sits proudly on a mantlepiece.
I was never a fan of his management style and how we went down theat year still baffles me, but hearing now about how the tumour literally destroyed him. I can understand some of it.
So many people have said great things about him and I'll always remember that small gesture from him.
Rest in peace

I know he was never a fan if Titi Camera, he was disappointed with him since we were short of fowards when Freddie and Paulo were injured from which he didn't take up the opportunity to shine. Titi simply just took his weekly wage and got fat!

Very good points. We did go on a great run for the last few weeks of that season, and over that season had more than our fair share of dodgy refereeing decisions go against us. Remember Mike Dean's absurd sending off of Steve Lomas at Highbury after Pires' blatant dive? That was also the same game where Dean and Wenger must have been the only 2 people in the stadium to fail to see Bergkamp's elbowing of Boywer's face, before his cross which led to Arsenal's 2nd goal.
And our usual bad luck. We absolutely put Southampton to the sword at The Boleyn but the ball just wouldn't go in. Then against the run of play, the Saints scored with virtually the final kick of the match.

And yet, the squad he inherited from Harry finished the season before with 42 points, same as we were relegated with. You can't have it both ways.
In that 02/03 season the causes of our relegation were more than just managerial incompetence. Here's some of them:
- Kanoute and di Canio being out most of the season through injury (and going AWOL) leaving us with an 18 year old as our sole striker
- The transfer window being introduced and the board apparently not realising that squad depth was even more important now
- Our player of the year the previous season (Schemmel) losing it completely and us needing to recall the 18 year old Glen Johnson in January.
A lot of people go on about Brooking changing things round completely in the last 3 games as if we hadn't won a game for months beforehand, but the fact is that we had gained 18 points in the previous 11 games with Roeder in charge, which is top 7 not relegation form.

To the multiple posters on here keen to point out Glenn's failings whilst at WH: let's hope when you go folk will focus on your failings rather than your achievements in life. Why come on here, at this moment in time, enthusiastic to pour scorn on this good man's career and life. Where's the respect?

Glenn Roeder was one of the poorest managers in the history of West Ham United. His 7th place was largely due to inheriting Harry's squad ad was found out the following season.
He was part of the newcastle defence that conceded 8 goals at the Boleyn, Roeder scoring one of them as an OG.
Safe to say I never liked the man but, his passing is still sad to me as he appears a decent fellow. RIP

He did well to get so much time after having a brain tumour, not many do. RIP GR and thoughts are with his family,
The wonder of medical science bought him an additional twenty years. It's quite remarkable that he returned to top flight management after his initial diagnosis and operation.
