Jose Fonte
Playing in a very strong Portuguese side tonight alongside Rueben Dias and Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose is 37 and is playing for Lille at the top of the French League as well.

Why didn't we get the best out of him?

Re: Jose Fonte
Never mind about Fonte - what about Joao Mario who appears to be back at Sporting on loan?

Re: Jose Fonte
Didn't we pay something like 8m for a 34 year old?

He was pretty average by then but let's be fair, until recently we've never really had a decent, settled back four.

I guess that shows how good Moyes and his team have been for us in that we look solid at the back even with our best CB is out injured.

Re: Jose Fonte
By the time he came to us he was getting on a bit.
At the end of his time at Southampton he played alongside a chap called Virgil Van Dijk which probably masked some of his shortcomings.

Re: Jose Fonte
Fonte was a decent player but he was far too slow and immobile for the PL. Didn't help that he played in a really shit West Ham team also that literally gave zero protection to its defence.

The fact that at 37 is playing well for Lille tells you less about us as a club and more about the French League at this moment in time which is slowly becoming on par with the Belgian league.

Does nobody remember how fucking slow and immobile he was??

To a man, the whole team were shocking around that time.

Re: Jose Fonte
Thought he was a shocking player, was slow, immobile and ponderous, and looked like a fucking waxwork. he resembled a waiter more then a footballer.

I always thought Fonte was better than most people gave him credit for when he was at West Ham but I would agree that he was inconsistent.

Chester - I had a good quip about Sullivan's brain-dead kid lined up, but you ruined it.

I mean the French leagie is fucking tragic at the moment other than psg and to an extent lyon and Portugal aren't that good either.

Prem is far more physical so no place to hide when you're getting old.

Re: Jose Fonte
He was a good player but I think Sullivan and his idiot spawn sounding off about being begged not to sign him meant his time here was never going to be a happy one. Typical Sullivan cash grab at the end. Flogging him to a Chinese club after the window had closed.

Didn’t realise Ronaldo was a defender.

Re: Jose Fonte
Because we dont have a Ronaldo to make him look competent.
