Hammer blow Declan Rice suffers knee injury and ruled out of West Ham’s clash with Wolves in blow to club’s Premier League top four hopes

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has suffered a knee injury, talkSPORT understands.

The 22-year-old returned from England duty last week with a problem and will not play in Monday night’s Premier League clash at Molineux.

Rice is undergoing further tests and it is expected he will miss more than one match.

His absence – for any length of time – will come as a big blow to boss David Moyes.

Rice has become arguably West Ham’s most important player and has been an ever-present since the start of the 2019/20 season.

He has been key to West Ham’s incredible campaign so far which has them chasing an unlikely top four spot and Champions League qualification.

Rice has also become an integral part of the England team and Gareth Southgate will hope he returns to action soon, with the youngster nailed-on for a place in the European Championship squad.

Rice played the full 90 minutes for England in the wins over Albania and Poland last week in their World Cup qualifying games.

He returned to West Ham following the 2-1 win over Poland at Wembley on Wednesday, where it emerged he had a knee injury and has been in a leg brace since.

West Ham hope the issue is not serious, but it is feared he will not be fit for the visit of Leicester on Sunday and there are some concerns the lay-off will be longer than a few weeks.

Mark Noble, the club captain, is expected to take Rice’s place in the West Ham starting line-up against Wolves.

A win for the Hammers tonight will move them above Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham and into the top four.

Reacting to the news on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino said: “When you look at the role Fabinho does at Liverpool and that N’Golo Kante does for Chelsea, that is what Rice does for West Ham.

“He sits, he can pick things, he can see things, players trust him. He does the simplistic things that can affect a team really well, and he keeps the ball.

“It is a huge blow. He is West Ham’s best player.

“David Moyes has done an exceptional job of finding solutions and that is what he has to do with Declan Rice out now.”

any deal that involves Lingard + Cash for Rice ought to be a non starter. Bringing Lingard permanently improves us. Lingard minus Rice weakens us, but our owners likely don't see it that way.

Interesting that you mention Spurs, as funny enough I said to my lad a the weekend that I could see him there, a proper Spurs type player and apparently gets on with Jose

West hams a big club nowhere near man utd obviously . But still bigger than the vast majority of clubs in England . Why so many of our fans want to belittle us is astonishing. As much as I despise Tottenham you never see their supporters doing it.

Why would Lingard move to a Rice-less West Ham?

'Manchester United will explore the possibility of signing England midfielder Declan Rice, 22, in any deal with West Ham for compatriot Jesse Lingard, 28. (Athletic - subscription required)'

Oh well, took all of a couple of days for that to manifest

So we can agree that we can’t fault his commitment. Then there is the question of whether the Daves would be tempted to sell in a market on the ropes through Covid and I’d say it’s a no-brainier they will not.

H&P not with him, I would expect nothing less.

Fair question fraser - I call it an indication of commitment to the club and his team mates.

Hope you don't mind me saying so. Oh and I wasn't suggesting his work rate and the possibility of him leaving excluded each other. The former is just an indication that the latter is less likely.

I fully expect him to still be with us next season. But unless the shysters sell up. I'd be astonished if he's still here after summer 2022.

Shouldn't talk or debate on him leaving just enjoy the moment of him turning the opposition in knots while wearing our shirt.
It's like taking photos all the time at a concert or talking about good sex.
Enjoy it while it lasts .

'what the fuck has running the length of the pitch and trying to score have to do with it?"

Embarrassing, isn't it? This is what happens when the Brexit thread dies off and Pickled attempts to include himself in a discussion about football.

Football's just a job for a professional player. They will swear allegiance to their current paymaster.

If Real Madrid come calling he won't tell them to fuck off because he'd rather the chance of a cup game with West Ham against Grimsby on a cold, wet Tuesday evening.

He may go, what the fuck has running the length of the pitch and trying to score have to do with it?

He's that sort of player, gives his all loves the club.. That and leaving aren't mutually exclusive

Re: Rice injured 4-6 weeks out - medial ligament damage
I think there’s a chance he’ll go after the next “ordinary” season we have. That could be sooner than later unfortunately because our owners either cannot or will not fund improvement of the squad to the extent that we can sustain top 5 finishes. I think for a variety of reasons he’ll be with us at least one more.

Re: Rice injured 4-6 weeks out - medial ligament damage
Didn’t seem like a player with his mind elsewhere when he tried to get us all three points on his own in the dying minutes of the Arsenal game. He took the ball out of defence and all but scored. If he had some would still say he is on his way out.

Re: Rice injured 4-6 weeks out - medial ligament damage
Not than Rice needs taking down a peg or two, in fact he appears very humble in interviews, but, if we do manage to perform well without him, it may well make him wonder how integral he is to us and that, perhaps, he is not indispensable. We all know he is, of course, but it may well sway any decision to want away and that his ongoing development would be better served staying with us. That said...money talks.

I thought we'd cash in on him at the end of this season, but COVID transfer prices, our owners greed and how well we're doing in the league will put a delay on that for another season, I reckon.
