Lingard Dropped for Euros
Forgive me if already posted but can anyone understand why Southgate has done this? Seems nuts to me.

Stupid if don't take Lingard...
One of few that looked like scoring or create an assist ..
And actually did pass for the winning goal..vs. Austria

Re: Lingard Dropped for Euros
Big shame for TAA, of course, but I actually think his injury could turn out to be a bit of a belssing for Southgate.

For the first time since he took over, he came under heavy fire for the choice of four right-backs. It didn't matter how he tried to dress it up (with that ridiculous defensive press conference about players being able to line up on the right side of a back three etc), he knows he got rightly called-out for bottling a big decision - which player from a big club to leave out.

He does pander to big clubs, there is little doubt about it. There are some outstanding players who buck that trend because they are too good to ignore, like Rice and Phillips, but Southgate is otherwise a little obsessed with the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs.

So he has regularly given opportunities to likes of Hudson-Odoi, a bit-part player at Chelsea, but less so Ward-Prowse at Southampton. I know which of those two is more 'tournament ready'.

Losing TAA is a blow because, at his best, he's the best attacking full-back we have. But we're lucky to have such depth at right-back and now being forced to pick just three RBs means the press won't be quite so hard on Southgate if the tournament does not go so well. He's been defaulted to a position where there is a tiny bit more balance to the squad (unless he picks another right-back!), so a tiny bit less pressure on him if and when he fails.

Re: Lingard Dropped for Euros
There is a certain level of cotton wool wrapping by the FA for fear of upsetting the big clubs and losing their big stars.

Look at England 2010 vs France 2010. Both had shockers in the World Cup.

France made their players fly back economy, straight into a public facing airport and then read the riot act. Phones and agents were banned from the france training camps, players had to sign a charter which included singing the national anthem. Loads of subtle changes to bring them together again.

The FA flew the England team back first class and into a private airport so they could avoid the public and the media.

It’s not as if England players haven’t been spared blushed before with an overstated injury rather than being dropped. Lampard for one.

So Southgate arranged the TTA injury? The things you read on this site.

I think Southgate will have listened to the backlash

I can see one of the right backs being declared unfit shortly

Lingard could be back in as a replacement for TAA.

Northern - definitely take your point on Southgate. It's a fair point. He sees him every day - I certainly don't (which is part of my slight reticence).

Southgate is generally good at handling and developing players, although he can be quite conservative tactically.

Listen, if this kid lights up this tournament and makes me eat my words about it being too soon - great. We've been crying out for the sort of player who can carry the ball through central midfield, and beat his man with the ball at his feet, since Gascoigne.

sbbb.... the few times I have seen him.. whether it's ECL... England... YT clips... his Birmingham shirt being retired... or whatever... I've been impressed... I imagine Southgate who works with him every day whilst he is with England ... is probably even more impressed than me... uncut diamond for sure but you can tell he has something about him...

Re: Lingard Dropped for Euros
FWIW, I thought he was ok last night. Showed some very nice touches and was clearly focused on his responsibilities, which is a good sign.

But, in all fairness to him, I wouldn’t judge anybody on a meaningless pre-tournament friendly. He probably just wanted to get through it without an injury now that he’s in the squad.

Re: Lingard Dropped for Euros
I thought Bellingham was ok, but he was easily outmuscled a few times. He’s a big enough lad that needs to use his weight a bit better. I don’t feel strongly that he should be in or out of the squad, though he shouldn’t be automatically first 11 like Rice rightly seems to be. We completely lost the midfield once he went off, and though Lingard wasn’t amazing, he worked a lot harder off the ball than his replacements.

Re: Lingard Dropped for Euros
Northern - so you’re basing your assessment of his readiness on one full appearance against Man City in the CL, and one where he got taken off (no fault of his)?

Or have you religiously watched most of Dortmund’s CL games live?

I get that he’s very talented. Quite clearly that’s the case. But I think the vast majority of English fans have seen him play maybe one or two full games. The rest have watched YouTube videos or highlights programmes.

The reason it’s important to watch him in full matches, as I’m sure you know, is that 17 year-olds often make bad decisions in games. They take up the wrong positions, they give the ball away cheaply and you get a sense of whether they are ready for the physicality of a major tournament against 30 year-olds. It’s all part of the learning process.

I’ve not seen enough of him live to know whether he’s ready for what’s coming. I hope he is - he looks like he’ll be an excellent player and I always want these kids to do well. But forgive me if I don’t yet quite get any love-in based mostly on watching a few Championship games, YouTube clips and hope. We’ve been there before - Jack Wilshere, anybody?

I get the Bellingham love in, but it's Sterling who should've made way for Lingard based on form for me.

Seem to be a lot of people who religiously watched Birmingham in the Championship, or specific full-length Bundesliga games, on here.

Or maybe just a lot of people who've watched YouTube highlights videos.

Re: Lingard Dropped for Euros
I don't doubt it. He looks a fine prospect.

I'm just not sure you take too many 17 year-old CM 'prospects' to major tournaments when the public expects you to get to the semis. Let's see in a few weeks.

A run-about in a meaningless pre-tournament friendly against Austria, where everybody will be avoiding injury, is not going to make or break him. Or England. I hope he plays tonight and plays well.
