I met his cousin many years ago - didn't have a good word to say about him - thought he was an arrogant twat.

Re: Paul Mariner has bought the farm
I remember as a kid him getting high sticked in a game and the studs ripping his shirt open. Nice red streaks if I recall.

Never fixed the tooth tho did he?

Re: Paul Mariner has bought the farm
Didn't care for the bloke. First he looked to be heading our way when he decided to go to the tractor boys.
Second, a few years later when he was at Arsenal I was returning from an offshore sales convention with the fmcg outfit I worked for at the time. We landed at Heathrow and were coming out of the terminal when we were confronted by a coach full of Arsenal players on the roadside. One of my colleagues was a particularly hot girl who Mariner and Rix spotted and started making some really foul remarks at.

Quite a few of us got very pissed off and tried getting at the cunts but the coach the door was well and truly shut.
In the end someone in a senior position at the club got off to apologise to the lady in question.

So I don't have a very high opinion of the bloke.

Really rated Mariner and was disappointed he went to Ipswich when WHU were looking at him when he played for Plymouth. RIP.

Re: Paul Mariner has bought the farm
Recall that great Ipswich team playing a friendly game against Brentwood Town just before a season started and all of them being so up for it with Butcher giving everyone hell for the full 90 minutes.
Think a Bentwood a player moved to them so it was part of the deal

A decent centre forward of the day.

Re: Paul Mariner has bought the farm
I remember back in the day it looked like Mariner was coming to us but went to Ipswich in the end, our board probably offered him 10 Bob and a packet of Jammy Dodgers as a signing on fee. RIP

Re: Paul Mariner has bought the farm
I remember John Lyall desperately trying to sign him from Plymouth, but he went to Ipswich, instead.

Lyall was desperately unlucky trying to sign centre forwards in those days. He tried several times to sign Kerry Dixon, who didn’t want to come to us and he even tried to sign both Warboys and Bannister from Bristol Rovers, who were scoring goals for fun in the Third Division. He did, however, sign Derek Hales, who was a bit of a flop for us, but who seemed to score lots of goals at other clubs.

Still, as a previous poster had stated, we didn’t do too badly with the original ‘Psycho’, who was great for us during the late 70’s and early 80’s.

1bill, a mate of my dad was a youth player at Ipswich and he'd often talk about beattie and how good he could have been if he'd avoided the serious knee injuries that fucked his career

Yea,my mistake Mike.

Remember the big talk about Cooper v Tonka at penalties?

I think they had some kind if shoot out at a friendly/testomonial at some point.

Just found out that Sir Alf Ramsey who led Ipswich to their first league title in 1963, was also a WHU fan

Re: Paul Mariner has bought the farm
In honour of Mariner, I'm going to invoke the spirit of "Ron's 22" from 1982. I'll spend the day in a cult England kit, with my shirt loose over my shorts, socks rolled down to my ankles and a pair of shorts so tight and high that I'll have at least one bollock exposed to the world.

You're welcome, Paul.
RIP.
