Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
I like this lad - he's got something about him and I reckon he has quite a big future. He has been good in pre-season, not amazing but very decent. He looks like he could do with a bit more physicality and confidence.

So should we keep him in the squad or loan him out? Also, should we be buying another DM? We have Noble and Lanzini as cover for Rice and Soucek so as it stands I would think Coventry will not get much game time, despite this being a very busy season coming up. Apparently there are three clubs interested in taking him on loan - Peterborough, Coventry and Hull. What do you think?

He is 21, could still use a loan if we have cover. I don't think we have cover yet. So stay.

Not in the category of someone like Xande Silva who we need to sell before the supposed 3.4 mill is completely unrecoverable.

Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
Needs a loan out for game time and to beef up a bit. As long as he's playing regularly at a decent level. He's not going to get enough game time with us and he'll be worthless at the end of a couple of seasons on the bench not playing.

Keep there are plenty of cup games (hopefully) for him to be involved in. Should be in and around the squad for the Premier League as we are prone to an injury or two.

Interesting that just about everyone wants to keep him. Apparently Ex has let it be known that Moyes is letting him go on loan to Peterborough - Hammers News making a big noise about it.

Surely Moyes wouldn't let him go without first bringing in another midfielder. Hopefully that's the missing part of the story. But it seems I was right in predicting that Moyes will value Noble's experience over any qualities that Coventry might possess.

He should be kept as an important member of the squad. He needs to get used to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
Based on the pre-season friendlies, which is the only time I have personally seen him play 90 mins, I am thinking we keep him. Of course these are only friendlies and players will not be putting in the full 100% in terms of challenges etc. So ideally we would want to see him get some minutes in a proper game to really know. And presumably Moyes and the coaching team will be aware of where he is right now. Must admit he has been one of the better players in these recent games, is not that quick but not a slow like say Noble and he gets about the pitch and does a lot of pressing and "getting a foot in". Against Brentford, our toughest game, he was neat and tidy in possession and made some crucial interceptions. He lacks the physical strength that has made Rice such a talent at such a young age but he does have good technique, skill, passing and control. Presumably he can build that physical strength over the next year or two.

When you factor in our almost non-existent recruitment so far this season and our first game a few weeks away it would seem Coventry is now indispensable? We have no back up for Rice or Soucek aside from a vet in his last season.

Keep.

Keep him if it means we don’t have 2 goalkeepers on the bench, and he is playing well.

Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
I like him. He moves the ball about well, can pick a forward pass and can gets around the pitch well enough ( he's not up and down like Soucek and Rice, but he's certainly more mobile than Noble is ). I think there could be a few goals in him, too.

He does get knocked off the ball a bit, but I think that will happen less and less once he has more games under his belt - he should then become less hesitant, more confident, which should lead to him standing his ground better.

If you played him along side Rice or Soucek, I think he'd only look better.

In an ideal world, we send him out on loan to a Championship team and then bring him back next season, but I can't see us buying a more established CM.

With all the extra games, there's no reason he can't play a fair amount and improve. He's not a bad 3rd/4th choice to have.

Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
We have no choice except to keep him surely.

He's the only proper CM we have except the starting two (Noble doesn't count now he's so slow).

Prior to the mass influx of high quality signings I would have said we def need to keep him..

Oh hang on...

Keep him!

Experience does count for something.

Which is why we should be giving him as much as possible. He has his whole career ahead of him, and Noble doesn't.

Agreed - last season would have been a good stage in his career to go out on loan, but he was injured for most of it. He made a big difference to the U23s when he came back but that was too late for a loan.

I can understand people saying he should be above Noble in the pecking order, but Noble's experience has to count for something, and I'm pretty sure that's how Moyes will see it. Coventry should get to play in the Carabao Cup games and we'll see how he goes from there.

Yes, keep.
Should start the early stages of the cups and be ready to sub, injured / tired 1st team midfield.

Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
He looked okay v Brentford. He has quite a similar build to Rice and looked comfortable though unsurprisingly took no risks. If he’s given 10-15 minutes from the bench in any matches where we are comfortable then he should come on nicely.

If Moyes won’t do that then he’s better off going out on loan (until January) to a championship club.

Keep, definitely. With Europa League this should be considered a breakthrough season.

But we won't.

Unless the player is absolutely stand out quality they don't get much opportunities at West Ham.

Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
I like his movement and forward thinking passing ability. He isn't the quickest or great in the air and is way too easily pushed off the ball. He is a decent squad player but doesn't offer as much as Lanzini. If we rest Soucek or Rice this year he may get a few games but I'd say his chances are limited.
At some point he deserves regular football somewhere.

Lee Trundle 2:42 Mon Aug 2
Re: Conor Coventry - keep or loan out?
I'd still keep him even if we buy another CM.

I like Lanzini, but I'm not entirely convinced he can play the deeper role. There's been at least 2 times he's been bullied off the ball and given it away on the edge of our box in preseason games this season that have lead to a goal, or a goal scoring opportunity.
