Not a red card Balbuena- Chelsea
The tackle by Fabian Balbuena that resulted in the West Ham player being sent off against Chelsea in April is now regarded as having been over-analysed, and the incorrect conclusion was reached.
New VAR rules this season

I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t have got a work permit for him.

The thing with this incident is everyone else knew that it wasn’t a red card. The VAR man and ref were just being dicks, or corrupt.

I always saw teething problems coming with VAR (after seeing similar in other sports) but probably the biggest disappointment is what you mention in the final paragraph.

We were promised, or I thought we were, that dives would be looked at and I can't remember an incident where it was. Always going to protect the "stars" it seems.

"Lee Mason has retired from active refereeing and becomes the Premier League's first dedicated VAR."

Yeah, with endless 'slomo' going over it time after time.

What they need to do is work out whether 'slomo' is helping provide a clearer view of what happened. In this case, and Soucek at Fulham, 'slomo' added fuck all, in fact it actually contorted the real situation.

The other thing about both of those incidents is Mitrovic and Chillwell both threw themselves to the floor, rolled around, no doubt give it the sound effects, and in both cases, the contact wasn't sufficient to cause the reaction. This has been studiously swerved by everyone.

Along with the Soucek elbow all VAR seemed to concentrate on was the point of contact not the entire incident

It was obviously a red card it was against Chelsea......if the incident were the other way round no one would have batted eye lid.....especially the Officials!

I suspect the classic of Salah getting a tap on the shin while standing still & throwing himself to the ground will still be a pen at Anfield.
Thought THAT is exactly the sort of incident they are supposedly referring too.
Lets see if actions match words

Balbuena wanted to leave , whether that was personal reasons or because he wanted to be first choice who knows.
Believe he was all lined up to join Pellegrini at Betis (which makes sense for a S American player) but some Russians offered to double his wages so he is off to freeze at the Russian front.

i'm sure VAR will still find away to award 'trivial' penalties to the big teams.

btw I think Balbuena wants to go back to South America.
agreed he was a solid back up when called upon.

Re: Not a red card Balbuena- Chelsea
I don’t really know why we let Balbuena leave.

He was a solid backup centre half who never really let us down when called upon.

And he can’t have been on big wages.

Unless he wanted out, of course.

"regarded as having been over-analysed, and the incorrect conclusion was reached."

Translation is that the incident occurred because of shit refereeing followed by shit VAR analysis.
Is there any prospect of shit refereeing being eradicated?

They talk about 'trivial incidents' (and use the example of Sterling v Denmark rather than the hundreds in the Premier league) not being penalised but not clear that if a ref gave a pen like the Sterling one because he genuinely thought there was more contact that VAR will overturn.
That to me was one of the biggest problems, refs and their VAR mates looking out for each other.
Still say the VAR crew should be separate from refs ... retired refs and former players.
