The superiority of old things.
The chips on all the recent space missions are mostly over twenty years old, and most of the rest are built to twenty-year old designs.

Why?

Because miniturisation makes memory more vulnerable to cosmic ray induced bit-flips, and a single bit-flip can turn an instruction to turn a thruster (say) on into the instruction to do nothing.

Even with redundancy (e.g., storing a critical value in four places and taking the majority as the "real" value), enough bit-flips can fuck all sorts of things up.

On Earth, where cosmic rays sufficiently energetic to cause a bit to change are quite rare, the advantages of miniturisation usually outweigh the low chance of critical memory bit-flips.

But there have been near disasters in aviation which are believed to have been caused by these flips, so redundancy should be built into critical systems, even on Earth.

Similarly, I'm quite old...

Mechanical watches and cameras. Have to love the engineering involved.

The only time you'll be smarter than me is when I'm dead.

But you'll probably get a Darwin prize and beat me to it.

You old fruit, the only thing in your Arsenal that is superior is your delusional sense of superiority.

Now go take a nap, ffs!
