Team for Man Utd
|
A highly professional performance in Zagreb and a great result, but can we keep the momentum going on Sunday? We'll do very well to get three points in this one - we're certainly capable of beating anyone on our day, but Man Utd's attacking options are going to be a huge threat.
In our first couple of games of the season, the team picked itself. Remember that? Now, it's anyone's guess, partly because we have more options since the new signings arrived, but also because Moyes is going to be using the squad, now that the games are coming thick and fast.
I was surprised and disappointed that Areola didn't play in Zagreb, but presumably he will get his debut in the League Cup game next week, not in this one.
I will be surprised if anyone agrees with my selection, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say I expect Moyes to go defensive to try to deal with Ronaldo & Co and try to hit them on the break. Masuaku is fit again to play at LWB and renew his effective partnership with Cresswell. Coufal on the other side.
In midfield I can't see beyond Rice and Soucek - Kral can also wait for the League Cup game for his debut. Expect Soucek to get into the box a bit more than he has been doing so far this season. With Antonio suspended, up front I would have a three of Vlasic, Bowen and Fornals, who will interchange positions to keep the CBs guessing. They will have to do a hell of a lot of running, so I expect a couple of them to be replaced second half, probably by Benrahma and Yarmolenko.
Fabianski Zouma Ogbonna Cresswell Coufal Rice Soucek Masuaku Vlasic Bowen Fornals
Subs: Areola, Fredericks, Johnson, Diop, Kral, Noble, Lanzini, Benrahma, Yarmolenko.

Little point in spending big to plug a defence leaking goals in the early games and then putting Zouma on the bench. Fab not the keeper he was plus understood Benrahma had a knock midweek.
Would be amazing to win this one, fingers crossed!

I think Moyes is planning a bit of rotation and resting players to have some good fresh legs for each game. I think Vlasic comes in for Antonio and that’s it.

Anybody that puts Yarmolenko in their starting line up for this game needs their head examined.

"can someone please get Rice off the free kicks?"
Yeah. Penalties too. I don't think Soucek has been as effective either since someone (Rice?) decided Rice should be the one making most of the forward runs. And yes, I know Rice scored yesterday from one of those runs.
Worries me that we gave him the captaincy and seem to be letting him do whatever he wants, probably in the vain hope that he'll stay here.

Tough one to call this - especially with no Antonio.
Agreed on the comments about Fabianski but I dont see Moyes dropping him until he makes a clanger.
Zouma in for Dawson.
I like the idea of Kral starting and letting Soucek play a bit further forward. Man United are very quick to break on teams and having that extra insurance would be good.
Front 3 of Benrahma, Bowen and Fornals. Bowen is due a goal.
and can someone please get Rice off the free kicks?

You know you're an imbecile when comma is calling out your football knowledge.

We're adults talking starting line-ups and formations here Twundle, and while what you reckon may or may not have happened during last night's game may be interesting, having a dig is not the way to put it. You see, adults like to have a glass of wine with their dinner as they enjoy a football match. When you work out how to contribute to an adult conversation, I might even raise a glass to you.

Last season after Haller had left, the 4 games we played without Antonio were all with 3 at the back.
I expect the same this time out so Exile's team, unless Masuaku is deemed not ready (or just not good enough), in which case it's likely to be:
Fabianski Coufal - Zouma - Ogbonna - Cresswell Rice - Soucek Vlasic - Benrahma - Fornals Bowen
I doubt that he's going to give Areola and Kral starting debuts in this game.

You were probably too pissed to notice, but there were times last night we changed formation to 3 at the back.

Much as I love Antonio, reason tells me Moyes is not going to be changing formation just because he's been carded.
Maybe other circumstances will force his hand but in my humble this one alone won't be enough.

almost entirely agree with The Exile but want to hold out some hope of scoring on the break rather than from a set piece so Benhrama please.

Agree with all that HUFTY.
Fabianski had enough time to scramble over to that deflected shot that went just wide last time. He just stood there and hoped it went wide though.

Exile You are right. I don't agree with Masuaku playing whatsoever. The evidence is there that we are better with out him. Definitely not a better defensive outfit. His one assist and no goals in the last 3 years give evidence to this. I'll even go for Areloa in goal. We played Zagreb off the park by being positive. Let's do the same as Manu are to good attacking wise. Defensively they are still weaker. Lanzini in for Masuaku.

He is ticking most boxes at the moment but I feel that he is playing Dawson until the next inevitable mistake. Got away with it at Southampton. Surely we play Zouma & Ogbonna.
Fabianski is getting away with it at the moment too, in terms of shots going just wide but with him rooted to the spot. Fabianski has a lot more credit in the bank though and I can put up with him being phased out.

You would hope after a whole close season and not buying a striker that we would be ready for when Antonio ts missing without changing the whole game plan because of it.
We're doing well I.hooe he doesn't change it.
