Winston Reid departs West Ham United by mutual consent

Winston Reid has thanked West Ham United and its supporters, after the long-serving defender today brought to an end his 11-year career with the Hammers.

The Club can confirm it has reached an agreement with Reid for the New Zealand international to depart and allow him to pursue first-team football elsewhere.

The 33-year-old has been a loyal and dependable servant ever since signing in the summer of 2010, and paid tribute to his time in East London and his relationship with the Claret and Blue Army upon his departure.

“I have a lot of respect for the Club, and we’ve found an agreement that’s good for everyone involved,” Reid told West Ham TV. “I came here in 2010 and have just enjoyed so much of playing for the Club. It’s been a special time.

“I’ve always felt that the fans have supported me, and I’ve always tried to give my best for them. At the end of the day, when you’re a footballer, that’s what you enjoy the most, going out there and playing in front of a lot of fans.

“Over the years, that’s also what I’ve enjoyed the most: playing for your fans, for your teammates, for your coaches and for your family.

“I just want to say ‘thank you’ and I wish you all the best for the future.”

Everyone at West Ham United would like to express their gratitude for the commitment, dedication and loyalty which Reid has shown the Club since 2010, and wish him and his family all the very best for the future.

Re: Winston Reid released
you know what would be REALLY good to recognise winston's exit from the club - hammers united should stop fannying around fretting about sweet sellers and logo's and organise a proper fans movement - a testimonial match between a winston 11 and ginger collins 11- im sure the daggers stadium can be hired out for a few quid- let the players pick their teams- offer up a couple of slots for fans to get on the pitch all profits to a charity or two ( not one that continually seems to need feeding...)

Can you imagine how pissed off that would make GSB #arf

No, I got it after a game vs Birmingham City in his debut season. We lost I believe.

He has got a few lovely framed photos in his house from the final game at UP from me though.

Seems like just yesterday that The Boleyn Insider was linking us with a goal scoring hero from the World Cup.

Probably our best defender over the last decade, not bad for a £4m signing.

Great player for us, was immense at the back for a few years.....at one point was arguably the best CB outside the top 6. Scored some big big goals too, was there for Millwall and the last game at UP.

Shame injuries have ruined the last few years for him, I hope he gets a testimonial he deserves a good send off from the fans

A good player - hope he gets the chance of a last hurrah somewhere.

Not the most naturally talented of defenders but, what he lost in technique, he made up for in fierce determination, desire and commitment to improve. A bit like Dawson right now. All squads/sides need those sorts of players.

As people have said, he can't be blamed for his injuries - or for signing such a generous contract when it was offered to him. The timing of his major injuries could not have been worse for him or the club.

Hope he has a stellar post-game career. A good man.

Re: Winston Reid released
Testimonials were to give a player a final boost of funds before they went onto own a pub/car dealership/gym.

They died off when the big money came in.

The only way a testimonial would be appropriate is for the money to go to the players chosen charity (And yes I do think Reid would be an appropriate case for one)

Why did they name him in Premier League?

Re: Winston Reid released
Immortalised in our clubs history for his goal in our last game at the Bolelyn. Testimonial yes or no?

I'm in the yes camp purely because most tend to generate funds for charity these days as players are well paid and financially secure and because he should be remembered for the dependable player he was for us and not the financial leech he became after serious injury whilst playing for us. Always gave 100%. Always cared and never moaned about his situation.
My guess is it wouldn't happen due to the fact we would have to 'hire' a ground to host it since we don't own a ground anymore.
I hope he at least gets to make an appearance at a home game to get the applause he deserves for the good seasons prior to injury.

One of the best centre backs we've had in the Premier League era. Always up for the big games especially against spurs.

Very good defender, the injury was pure bad luck, thanks for the memories Winston.

Agree with the sentiments on here.

He was a very good defender for several years. Our best defender in fact. As Alfs says, shame testimonials do not happen anymore so hope he gets to play a bit more even if at a lower level. Even better if he could return to play us with some club in the cup or whatever.

Like I say, hope he at least gets to play a few more years professionally. Not so often nowadays that a player's career gets curtailed by one really bad injury but unlike the old days at least no worries financially thanks to Mr Sullivan the football finance genius :-)

I'm not having the 'loyalty' nonsense, for fucks sake. That aside, he was a good stylish player for us when he played, and a leader of men. I wish him all the best (not that he'll be reading)
