Team for Everton
A very important game, this one. For one thing, we need to bounce back from the defeat to Brentford. But most important is that Everton are one of our closest rivals and three points here will go a long way to ensuring we finish above them again.

For years, it seems, Everton were something of a bogey team for us, especially when Lukaku was playing for them and scoring in just about every game against us. But we have done much better against them more recently and apparently they have a number of injuries, so this could be a good time to play them.

I expect no messing about from Moyes - the usual full-strength first eleven. Coufal may not quite be fit but I would have no worries about Fredericks stepping in - he has done well when he has played this season.

Fabianski
Coufal Zouma Ogbonna Cresswell
Rice Soucek
Bowen Fornals Benrahma
Antonio

Subs: Areola, Fredericks, Diop, Dawson, Noble, Kral, Lanzini, Vlasic, Yarmolenko.

Preventing the opposing team from scoring in the last minute would be good. Scoring a pen in the last minute would be good too.

Re: Team for Everton
Yeah, he's been pretty decent at that, but we still need someone holding and that's not Soucek's game. So it's either bring in Kral and drop Soucek or include all 3 and have a less creative midfield. Rice as the anchor man still seems the best option to me.

Experimenting in the easier games is all very well but doesn't mean it'll work in the other games anyway, so it might be better to be well drilled in the way you play, know instinctively where your teammates are going to be, etc.

Last season after Masuaku got injured Moyes did try going back to 352 with Johnson/Fredericks as LWB 7 times. We beat Sheff Utd and Leicester, drew with Brighton and lost to Newcastle, Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea. So probably little or no difference to what would have happened if we'd stuck with the usual 4231.

Re: Team for Everton

Yeah, maybe. But his driving forward has been a lot more productive in goals and assists than I would ever have imagined.

As I say, in less important or challenging games, I'd like to see different things experimented with. Declan sitting back, Kral sitting back and Declan and Soucek bombing forward, and so on.

Fancy yarmolenko to score today if he's involved.

"4-1-2-1 with Rice holding means he can't get forward so often."

Personally I think that would be a good thing. Not for him and his ambitions perhaps, but for the team definitely. I don't think anyone believes our midfield has been stronger this season than last, when he was focusing on breaking up the opposition's play and not on getting goals or assists so that he'll look a more attractive buy for a top 4 club. He can stop with the rubbish free kicks and penalties as well.

Re: Team for Everton
I generally think that people exaggerate the importance of formations. Changing formation often just solves one problem by creating another. For example, 5-3-2 means dropping one of our attacking midfielders for Masuaku. I don't mind Masuaku, but he's been nowhere near as good as Bowen, Benrahma or Fornals.

4-3-3 with Kral allows Soucek and Rice to get forward, but at the cost of one of our attacking midfielders, all of whom have been more important thus far than Kral.

4-1-2-1 with Rice holding means he can't get forward so often. And so on.

Maybe for less important games or when there are injuries to our front four we can mix it up a bit, but right now they're too important for creating goal-scoring chances.

Re: Team for Everton
tnb, I've thought for a long time that we should try a 4-4-2 diamond. This works with the forwards we have: Antonio, Bowen, Benrahma and Yarmolenko are all good for running the channels, while only one can really play a sole CF role.

In central midfield I'd like Rice to go back to being an anchor man, with Fornals and Soucek ahead of him, and Vlasic/Benrahma in the hole.

Re: Team for Everton
Areola for Fabianski would be harsh. Areola’s distribution is better but he hasn’t done anything special so far versus Fabianski hasn’t done too much wrong and has been mostly solid since he signed. It will happen at some point - at the latest at the start of next season - but while you could say why wait for Fabianski to make a big mistake there is no saying he will, and only a very small sample to say that Areola would do any better. Fabianski is the player in possession of the shirt and we have to show some faith.

Apart from spells, Ogbonna has only ever looked decent in a three. I’m a big advocate of having a left footer at centre half but on form for some time now you would have to pick Dawson, alongside Zouma as a new addition who is clearly quality. In a back four, the full backs pick themselves.

Unless you make a big change with Kral, Rice, and Soucek then I don’t see the advantage in midfield of going to five at the back. It would probably still be Rice, Soucek, and Fornals in a 5-3-2 which is no different in practice to the central three in a 4-2-3-1. And getting overrun in midfield is our big issue recently, so whilst it may need addressing I don’t think weakening it is the answer.

A 3-4-3 (which would quickly become a 5-2-3) would be suicidal. A 3-5-2/ 5-3-2 would put Bowen out of position and effectively swap Benrahma for Masuaku which would be a downgrade - as average as Benrahma was last time out, Moyes doesn’t seem to trust Masuaku and most fans would be in agreement I suspect. And Bowen is much better out wide than up front.

The only possible tweak I see is going back to the 4-4-2 diamond from back in the Sakho/ Valencia days. But even then without a proper second striker you are putting round pegs into square holes, and putting a lot on the full backs in terms of providing width:

Fabianski/ Areola

Coufal
Zouma
Dawson/ Ogbonna
Cresswell

Kral

Rice
Soucek

Fornals

Bowen
Antonio

Fornals says we will cause Everton problem.
In just about every quote on whufc.com he says he is happy. Excellent stuff.
I’ve put him in my fantasy team.

Re: Team for Everton
The thing about Fabianski is due to his age his mobility is less. The first Brentford goal a younger keeper would of done better,he was that fraction of a second getting up from the initial shot.Keepers practice this all the time in training.
Time for Areloa to earn his contract and no 1 role. He's not going to earn it biting his nails through his gloves on the bench.
Johnson is still a better bet at right back.Fredericks is still not good enough. I hope Ashby gets a chance soon as he looks the better of all three of them.Maybe some minutes in one of the Genk games.

Agree OP if fit...
Appropriate subs early on around 70mins as needed...
Especially for international players...
Wake up Moyes...88th minute subs not good enough...fresh legs...new ideas...early on...
It's a long season...

So one or two injuries after the internationals according to Moyes. Wouldn't reveal who but obviously from Rice, Soucek, Bemrahma, Vlasic and Yarmolenko. The preferred options pick themselves

Think the OP has this spot on. Can't see a change unless there is an injury. Vlasic might have a point to prove if he comes on.
Zouma for me so far has been a bit wasteful with the ball and is caught out of position too much. He needs time to settle into the team and adapt to how his team mates play. e.g. don't disappear into midfield if Coufal has gone forward and leave a big gap to exploit.

Everton always a struggle to beat and I expect this to be no different. We really need our players to be up for it and to put away whatever opportunities we make.

I would be shocked if the team contained both fabs and ogbonna

I would start either Dawson/diop on the right and put zouma in his natural position on the left

Fabs is a 50/50 for me

"Thought we were well on top against Brentford"

I dont know about that. We battled hard in the 2nd half. But they'd done a number on us really.
In fact, in the last few games we dont really look comfortable. We shouldn't have to play out of our skin to get points.

something isn't right.
