Olympics: Boxing, weightlifting & modern pentathlon not in initial programme for Los Angeles 2028
Weightlifting is one of three sports not included on LA 2028's initial programme Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon have not been included on the initial programme for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, but could be added at a later date.
On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee session in Beijing approved a programme of 28 sports, with a "strong focus on youth".
Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing have been included.
LA will be able to propose additional sports in 2023.
Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon could be added to the programme next year if they successfully demonstrate they have addressed issues within their sports.
Boxing's international federation, the AIBA, must show it has addressed concerns around the sport's governance and the integrity of its refereeing and judging processes.
In September, an independent investigation found a system to manipulate the outcome of boxing matches by officials was in place at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Weightlifting must address the historic issue of doping within the sport, while modern pentathlon must finalise its replacement of showjumping, while increasing its appeal to young people.

Interesting! I didn't realise that's how it played out. I can completely see the IOC having that attitude but all along I thought it was down to Coe and Jowell.

The IOC used a lot of 'soft power' to make it clear they'd be uncomfortable with a sport like Premier League football having such an obvious benefit and presence at 'their' stadium (they are so deluded, that's how they see it).
As you've mentioned, Scorch, there's a lot of snobbery involved in sport - and none more so than the IOC, which sees itself as the controller of all things outside of big-money sport. They did not insist that the stadium couldn't be dual use, but they made it clear that football should not be front and centre.
Which panicked Coe and Livingstone and made them wary of Terry Brown's (for once) sensible offer.
I interviewed Livingstone when he revealed that he'd turned down the offer and instead helped West Ham to identify the former gas works/postal depot near West Ham station as a potential site for a new, bespoke football stadium. But we'd have needed serious money for that.

Definitely the legacy and sustainability was a big part of what landed the games, but I don't think the IOC said it COULDN'T have a football legacy, did they? That was just Coe and Jowell being snobs and refusing to entertain football, despite it being the only sensible option to ensure the stadium's survival. It would be sitting there rotting or have been sold to foreign investors and demolished for flats by now if it weren't for us being in it, I'm sure.

Mike,
Yes - in the sense that they continually insisted on the athletics legacy and led the likes of Coe and Livingstone to back stadium proposals which made no sense whatsoever.
Remember the stupid original idea was to build the 80,000 stadium and then collapse it down to merely a 25,000-seat athletics track after the games. Athletics in this country rarely gets anywhere near 25,000 gates, unless it is a major championships.
Even Terry Brown, one of the least forward-thinking people I've ever known, offered to pay £100m+ to ensure that the stadium could be better converted for dual use. And, due to the IOC's pressure, Coe and Livingstone etc said no.
Hence...

No chance that'll ever happen.

Did the IOC have anything to do with the design of our new home?

Exactly this - nothing to do with America, other than those that sit on the IOC.
Of the 101 current members and 45 honorary members, 1 is from the USA.

The yanks aren't messing around with the schedule, the IOC decides, which disciplines are included, at each games.

It's already stupid that baseball is (sometimes) an olympic sport. Almost as silly as the idea of American football. So few countries play it to anything like a good standard for it to be included.

It feels like just a wake up call for boxing and weightlifting to sort their shit out. I'm sure they'll end up being added as they are quintessential Olympic sports.
Modern pentathlon really should stay for tradition and I hope it does. I don't like this fucking about with sports to make them more 'current' and appealing to kids. 2020 already had a bit of a feel like it was turning into the fucking X games.
Still a massive bugbear that squash isn't included, time after time.
