Very much a product of its times but fucking hell, it's shocking to twenty first century ears. I watched the West Ham one with my mouth wide open. Who gives a shit that the 'darkie', 'sambo'', 'nig-nog' etc comes out on top at the end of the show?

It just condones that kind of language and I would have hated to be black and at work the day after the show was aired.

My old man was still talking like that until he died in 2017.

A hateful show

Alfs: Maybe…..but, 25 minutes of racist insinuations and language cannot be negated by a final 3 minutes of white man’s ridicule at end and black neighbour coming out on top. Perhaps its heart was in the right place but still misguided. Lacked that brilliant script writing that Speight brought to Alf G.

LTN was a Poundland version of Alf Garnett.

People go on about how Love Thy Neighbour was racist. It wasn't at all. It highlighted the small mindedness of white people when it came to their attitudes to black people.

The black guy always came up tops in the end.

Re: Jack Smethurst has bought the farm.
Good actor and lovely bloke apparently. I saw the tweet from his family earlier.

A deliberately misinterpreted program that actually had a pretty progressive message. Like Rising Damp and Til Death Us Do Part, most people can't get irony.
