Don't think age was a factor. Bingham gave Best an open door to prove himself. Best was also given an opportunity to play for Middlesbrough. Their manager said to Best " ...come down with us and work on your fitness so that you can be in the World Cup". A number of NI players, such as Jennings, Mcilroy and Platt (NI No2 Keeper, who played for Middlesbrough) wanted him to be in the squad. However Best turned the offer down since his Mrs is not keen on moving to Middlesbrough and that they had a new baby, as well as the fact he felt he would be just making up the numbers.

Best offered to come out of retirement for the 82WC but they told him to fuck off cos he was 36 and pissed up all the time.

In the posh N Ireland accent stakes he came a very close second to Terry Neil, with "Denny" Blanchflower third.
A different time alright

Re: Billy Bingham has bought the farm
When a bloke takes a nation generally not respected on the football front and turns them into something that has to be respected then you have yourself a genius.......RIP Billy Bingham....I enjoyed you creating a team that was the ultimate underdog......and a joy to watch them take on all comers.

I remember them beating Spain in the 82 world cup.

They were a good side, so they were.

Re: Billy Bingham has bought the farm
Best coach NI ever had. Getting to 2 world cups for a nation of that size is nothing short of miraculous. One of a handful of teams to beat the Germans home and away in a qualifying group. RIP to a really good manager.
