Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
|
West Ham United can confirm 18-year-old Sonny Perkins has left the Club.
Perkins, who joined the West Ham United Academy at Under-14 level, rejected the Club's offers of a professional contract.
The Club is now entitled to receive compensation from any club Perkins decides to join.
West Ham United invests millions of pounds annually into its world-renowned Academy of Football – and naturally the Club is extremely disappointed that Sonny has chosen not to continue his development with the Hammers.
The Club is disappointed with Perkins' representatives and strongly believe he was approached to sign for another club which led to him asking to be released from his scholarship at West Ham United.
West Ham United take this matter very seriously – we believe the rules and structures in place at the Football Association and Premier League should be upheld at all times.
The Club will be making no further comment.

Saw the highlights of C Palace 3 , West Ham 4 from the other day at under 19 level.
Came from 3-0 down.
Very impressed by Calum Marshall, the Northern Irish striker we signed at the back end of last season. Scored another 2 goals. Looked far better than Perkins. Better than Mipo, what's happened to him? And the black lad Muamba??
Confident on the ball, good touch and awareness, seems 2 footed, gets stuck in, nippy.
Bit like Tony Cottee.

Mex I think it had a bit more to do with the 20bags a week he wanted rather than how many games he was going to get. He’s on over 900k a year just after he’s turned 18 without a single first team goal to his name if you compare that to Rice who seemed far more interested in what was going on the pitch than what what’s going on in his bank account think he was on about 2 grand a week at Perkins age. Got on with his football and within 18 months got a proper deal. Club have done

Unsavoury dealings, leading to a rare indifference from the fan base who usually take an active, supportive interest in the Youth team.
Jeremy Ngakia/Ben Johnson scenario would be good here allowing us to let this go without a backward glance.

Is there something wrong in the academy? Becoming more frequent that players don't feel the opportunity is there and leave.

We will have no choice but to include several of our u21 team on our bench unless we sign another few players.

Sad to see him go, had potential. If you add to him Fredericks, Noble, Yarmalenko and Martin our squad is now smaller than the one we finished up with last season. And there was I thinking we were going to add 6 or 7 players to that outrageously small squad, so is it now 10 or 11???

I've come to realise - after years of disappointment - that the Academy is just another possible source of player transfers, not some automatic conveyor belt to feed the first team squad.
There are Premier teams, lower league teams, foreign teams and the Academy. If we need a player, we will look in all of those places for the best option. There are pros and cons to all of them.
The Academy should be a lower cost option, perhaps it is even our "preferred supplier", and yes there is an element of being able to influence the development of the players to fit our requirements, but if we need a particular player in a particular position and the right option doesn't happen to be available within the Academy at the right time we have to try and get one from somewhere else. If the right time never comes, we let them leave, hopefully for a fee to recoup some or all of the cost of development. It's probably profitable.
Promotion from the Academy has become less frequent under Moyes because as we know he doesn't like signing players just to make up the numbers, which is a shame for our home grown talent.
No idea what happened with Sonny. But I suspect if Moyes had really wanted him he would have made it happen. Perhaps he was just one of several ok options and he wasn't that bothered either way.
