Jones claims Moyes has Downes ‘on reins’ this season

Alfie Vincent

According to transfer insider, Dean Jones, West Ham United want new signing Flynn Downes to burst into the team this season but David Moyes has him ‘on reins’ for now.

The Hammers have started the season slowly despite improving the squad in the summer, spending an incredible £163.8m on stars like Lucas Paqueta, Gianluca Scamacca, Emerson, and Nayef Aguerd to name a few.

They also bought Championship starlet Downes from Swansea City for £9.59m, and while is highly rated, he is yet to make a big impact on the first team, only making one Premier League appearance so far.

In a recent interview with GiveMeSport, Jones claimed the lack of game time is down to the manager and claims Moyes is keeping him on a leash this season and will not throw him into the first team straight away.

Jones said, “They want him to burst through this season. But you know, Moyes has kind of got him on reins at the moment. He kind of wants him to take baby steps into the team.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

While fans may want to see Downes come into the side soon, especially after their shaky start, Moyes is doing the right thing by slowly bedding him into the first team and to the fast pace of Premier League football.

So far this season, Downes has only played for a total of one minute in the topflight but has picked up minutes in the cup competitions for the Hammers. The 23-year-old has featured more in their Europa Conference League, making three appearances for a total of 118 minutes.

Downes has a lot of time left to become a star player for the Irons, right now it is important that he gets up to speed with the level of football the club wants to play. Moyes is doing the right thing for the club and the player right now and I am sure we will see more of Downes as the season goes on.

David Moyes provides update on Harrison Ashby’s West Ham absence amid Newcastle transfer links

West Ham United boss David Moyes has provided an update on young right-back Harrison Ashby, who has not been in the first-team squad in recent weeks amid links with interest from Newcastle United

By Jonty ColmanWest Ham United FC writer

West Ham United defender Harrison Ashby has had a period of absence from the squad in recent weeks amid interest of a deadline day move from Newcastle United.

The young Hammers right-back had been with the first-team squad in the opening weeks of the campaign and featured in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off qualifying win over Danish side Viborg last month, playing the duration of that game, but has not been in the squad since the defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion three days after his European run out.

On deadline day, the 20-year-old had attracted transfer interest from the Hammers’ Premier League rivals Newcastle, although the Scottish defender stayed put at the London Stadium.

His recent absence has led to question marks from supporters given the speculation over his future. However, when asked why he has not been seen in recent weeks, Moyes confirmed that Ashby has recently been absent with a groin injury and would have played in Thursday night’s win over Silkeborg, had he been available.

“Harrison had a groin strain and in truth, if he had been available and with us, we would’ve tried to get him some minutes because we’ve only really had Vladimir Coufal in that area at the moment with us because of Ben Johnson’s injury,” Moyes told football.london.

“Harrison is fine. Before we left, I saw him, he was back trying to start his rehab and he was back on the grass but he’s still slightly feeling it, so that is the reason he wasn’t in the squad or even with us.”

West Ham's 17yo CB of Nigerian descent joins Celtic on three-year deal

Scottish Premiership champions Glasgow Celtic have finally announced the signing of Irish-Nigerian central defender Justin Osagie.

Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported fifty-one days ago that Osagie has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at Parkhead until June 30, 2025 and the Hoops have confirmed as much, stating that he has signed a three-year contract.

Celtic have also confirmed that Osagie will initially start his career in Scotland with the B team, but should be eligible to play for the senior side if required.
The 17-year-old has joined Celtic from the academy team of West Ham United, where he spent two years.

He arrives at Celtic with a huge reputation, having been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton & Hove in the past.

This summer, Osagie was called up for a Republic of Ireland U19 training camp.
He links up with promising Nigeria-eligible youngsters Bosun Lawal and Tobi Oluwayemi at Celtic B.

£30m star could make 'important' return soon at London Stadium

West Ham United suffered a ‘massive setback’ when they lost summer signing Nayef Aguerd to injury on the eve of the campaign, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 26-year-old is yet to make his debut for his new employers after he suffered a serious ankle issue against Rangers in a pre-season friendly but is now closing in on a return to action.
What is the latest news involving Aguerd?

West Ham splashed out £30 million to prise Aguerd away from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes back in June, tying him down to a five-year contract after fending off competition from Newcastle United.

However, the Morocco international had to undergo surgery after making just a couple of appearances for the Hammers, much to the disappointment of manager David Moyes.

“That is a huge blow to us. We signed a centre-back and he gets injured in the first or second game. He has had an operation and we think he will probably be back in 10 weeks,” Moyes told Football.London.

The original timeframe given by the 59-year-old tactician would have seen Aguerd return by the end of October, and it seems he is on track to do just that.

A recent post on social media showed the central defender back in the gym at the club’s training ground, sparking hope of an imminent return to action amongst the West Ham fanbase.

What has Jones said about Aguerd?

Jones believes you ‘can’t really explain how important’ Aguerd’s return to fitness will be for West Ham following their underwhelming start to the current campaign.

He told GiveMeSport: “You can’t really explain enough how important it is that they have him back. He was such a good piece of early business, and they were so happy to have him through the door.

“So, to lose him before the season began was a massive setback, and it’s definitely impacted their start to the season.”

How good is Aguerd?

Aguerd registered an impressive four goals and three assists in 40 appearances last season, helping Rennes achieve a fourth-placed finish in Ligue 1.

As per WhoScored, the 6 foot 2 ace won 3.1 aerial duels while also averaging four clearances and 0.5 blocks per top-flight fixture, placing him in the top four for each metric when compared to his teammates.

The left-footed defender is also accomplished with the ball at his feet, though, and averaged 70.8 passes and 5.6 long balls, the highest tallies amongst outfield players for Rennes in 2021/22.

If Aguerd can replicate that sort of form in a West Ham shirt, then Moyes will surely be hopeful that his side can climb up the Premier League standings.
