West Ham reignite interest in Leeds target likened to £72m star

Dylan Walsh

West Ham have reportedly reignited their interest in Club Brugge star Noa Lang, who Leeds United have been looking to sign for the past 12 months.

According to CalcioMercato, the Hammers are one of three clubs looking to sign the Netherlands international in January, with AC Milan and Atletico Madrid also chasing Lang, with West Ham being linked to the 23-year-old in the summer transfer window.

Likened to £72m Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe by Belgian journalist Bart Lagae as per Football London, Lang has endured a rough season so far with Brugge despite the club’s sensational start in both the league and UEFA Champions League, with the winger scoring just one and assisting another in all competitions.

Able to play as a winger or as a centre-forward, Lang was heavily linked with a move to Leeds in Marcelo Bielsa’s final summer window in charge of the Yorkshire giants, with the Athletic even reporting that the Argentina manager rejected the chance to bring the attacker to Elland Road.

Indeed, West Ham signing Lang would be quite the kicker for Leeds given how much the Whites wanted to bring the forward to the Premier League. However, with Jesse Marsch spending well this summer to bolster the flanks, moving on from the Brugee star might not be the worst thing.

With the Irons’ also needing the depth and quality out on the wings, Lang could be a brilliant signing for David Moyes in January. However, West Ham’s main issue will be trying to beat the likes of Atletico and Milan to the youngster’s signature.

Lang might have suffered a frustrating start to the season, in large part to injury, but there’s no denying that the Dutch attacker will make for a great addition for many top sides. However, for West Ham, signing the attacker could be a struggle given the level of competition.

Atletico and Milan are two of the biggest clubs in Europe, and whilst West Ham now find themselves in regular continental football, signing Lang might be a stretch too far for the Irons in the January transfer window, with Premier League sides potential returning for the forward.

‘The auction starts’ – West Ham’s double-digit offer needs to be improved for deal

In August, we covered claims from Italy that West Ham had made a €12m offer for Jakub Kiwior and that the bid had been rejected by the player’s current club Spezia Calcio.

The Serie A side were said to be open to a deal which would have seen the player remain with them on loan for the rest of the season, but the Hammers didn’t seem to be keen on that scenario.

In September it was then reported AC Milan were closing in on a deal for the Spezia player, worth around €18m. West Ham were pulled back into the picture towards the end of the month, for a deal looking towards a future window, but it was thought the Rossoneri were in the lead.

Calciomercato.it now cover the situation and say ‘the auction starts’ with more clubs coming forward. West Ham and AC Milan get a mention, but it’s claimed Juventus, AS Roma and Inter Milan are also keen.

According to the report, David Moyes’ side made a ‘double-digit offer’ during the summer, which will relate to the €12m. Given the competition now in place, and the talk of an auction, that offer will need to be improved if the Hammers are to beat the rest.
