Axel Disasi ‘really enjoying’ West Ham loan spell after ‘tough’ Chelsea exile

Axel Disasi says he is “really enjoying” his loan spell at West Ham United and does not take playing regularly for granted after a “tough” experience on the sidelines at Chelsea.
The 28-year-old defender, who joined on deadline day in the winter transfer window, has impressed in his seven appearances under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Disasi, whose loan deal does not include an option to buy, made his debut in the 2-0 away win against Burnley on February 7.
It was a solid performance considering he had not made a senior appearance for his parent club this season. He has not featured in a competitive game for Chelsea since playing 13 minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 20, 2025. Disasi trained separately from the first team and said his prolonged absence from playing made him mentally stronger.
“If I say everything, maybe I will get in trouble!” Disasi told The Athletic following the FA Cup fifth round penalty shootout victory against Brentford. “It was very tough watching games every weekend on the TV. So I just waited for my time and that’s why now I’m just enjoying it, because I know what it feels to be in front of the TV and not on the pitch.
“So I try to enjoy every moment, because I know that it’s not guaranteed. I learned to be more patient and to stay professional, even if the circumstances are hard. I had the help of my family, and they helped me stay in good shape.
“So far my experience (here at West Ham) is very nice. At the moment, when I’m on the pitch the feeling is great. Obviously, before, it was not the case for me. But I’m just enjoying playing again.”
In the summer of 2023, Disasi joined Chelsea from Monaco on a six-year contract. He made 37 league appearances before signing for Aston Villa on loan in February 2025. The centre-back made 10 appearances across all competitions during his brief stint.
Since joining West Ham, Disasi has strengthened their chances of retaining their top-flight status. Nuno’s side are in the relegation zone, level on points (28) with Nottingham Forest. Disasi has helped West Ham keep clean sheets in three of their last seven games. He was signed after the head coach missed out on Toulouse’s Charlie Cresswell and Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
When asked about the possibility of a permanent transfer, Disasi said: “We still have nine games to go so I don’t want to think about this for the moment. “ just want to enjoy my time. I needed to play and especially in my position because it’s something that I missed last season (at Aston Villa), when I was playing out of position. The manager has allowed me to express myself.”
The five-time France international has not played for the national team since featuring against Greece in November 2023. Disasi was a member of their 2022 World Cup squad and made three appearances. He was an unused substitute in the final against Argentina, where France lost 7-5 on penalties. Disasi will hope his form attracts the attention of manager Didier Deschamps.
“I played the last one and every player wants to play the World Cup,” Disasi added. “But as life teaches me, the first part of the season, you never know what can happen. Obviously, every weekend I play hard to be in the best position. But as I tell you, life sometimes gives you some surprises.”
