West Ham decision awaited on injured player – Surgery ‘significantly lengthens’ recovery
By Naveen Ullal
West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez has been on loan at Fenerbahçe since the summer.
The Mexico international hasn’t had a good spell with the Istanbul club mainly because of injuries and fitness.
To put it in context, the West Ham owned player has missed over 85 days since joining Fenerbahçe. This has limited his playing time to 1,125 minutes from 17 matches in all competitions.
West Ham player’s situation
The defensive midfielder has made three appearances in this calendar year and hasn’t featured for the Turkish club since February 2nd. Recent claims from Turkey have stated the 28-year-old is very likely to go under the knife, and this has now reached Mexico.
TUDN in Mexico relays it and then provides their own take on the West Ham man’s current situation. Journalist Mauricio Ymay has shared the latest ..
Both the national team and the Yellow Canaries specialists are keeping a watch on Álvarez’s ankle injury.
As he’s still contracted to Nuno Espírito Santo’s side, West Ham will have a huge say on his recovery process. According to Ymay, the Hammers will have to make the final decision on whether or not he will undergo surgery.
Injury concern for national team
The journalist insists there’s hope within the Mexico camp that he avoids going under the knife. That’s because his recovery time would be ‘significantly longer’ if the former Ajax man undergoes surgery.
This is concerning for Mexico because he will certainly miss the March international break and there could be doubts over his involvement at the next World Cup.
What’s next for Álvarez
Despite his restricted role for the Süper Lig side, the Mexican had attracted interest from elsewhere in the winter market. Last month, Fenerbahçe director Devin Özek closed the door on his exit after confirming several clubs were keen.
Fenerbahçe have a €22m purchase option, and Sport Witness covered Turkish claims that it’s high for them.
Álvarez will return to West Ham if his loan stay isn’t made permanent.
