Some players in the U21s tonight were not wearing a poppy.
So what?
Most people choose to wear them and some don't.
I will on Sunday but am unbothered by those who don't.

For me the poppy is a symbol of remembrance. A symbol and perhaps a few pennies towards supporting those who have chosen to serve in the armed forces. Few survivors now would be conscripts, I would guess.  Sometimes I buy one, sometimes I don't. It doesn't make a difference to my family history. I would imagine most on here could easily trace a relative who was killed in the first world war. In my case it was my great grandfather. Obviously I never knew him and nor did my mother, but I have a brass plaque my great grandmother was given after he lost his life. I am also lucky enough to have one of two surviving letters he wrote from the trenches. The one I have dates from a couple of days before he died and is gut wrenchingly mundane in view of what was to come. He talked about the garden and how his younger siblings must be growing up. His remains are at Thiepval in northern France. My son uses the letter in his History lessons. Maybe it might bring a bit of reality to an event which I personally hope none of us will ever have to experience. More recently, other members of my extended family have served, that didn't stop me from questioning the reasons why some of those later conflicts took place. The Falklands, Iraq etc.

If you wear a poppy, it doesn't make you a right wing fascist. If you don't, it doesn't make you a leftie cսnt. If that's the level at which you operate it says more about your intellect than anything else. Wedgewood Benn was a fighter pilot in the war and yet was villified in the press for being a communist peacenik. What does that tell you about some of the press? These things are nuanced. So please, reign it in a bit, and think about what it's really all about. You might find you have more in common with the people you're slagging off than you think.

Here endeth the sermon. Apologies.

Ahead of our Remembrance Day fixture with Burnley on Saturday, four members of West Ham United’s U12s squad visited the historic Poppy Factory in Richmond as part of a special educational and community project designed to help young players connect football with remembrance, respect and social action.

I like the idea of history being taught and celebrated for good.

Some players wear a poppy , some dont
Some players take a knee, some don’t

I can imagine most people who fought for the country fought for the right for people to have the right to be free & follow their own conscience

We are in the angry man time of the year
Flag shaggers, roundabout painters, poppy shaggers & the bloke last week complaining that a box of mince pies didn’t have the word Christmas on it

You have to question the motives of those sticking this kind of story out there and also the timing of it

To agitate and hijack the march maybe and turn the narrative into something other than what it is ?

This is all about true West ham fans showing their feelings highlighting the issues that exist and trying to improve things for us and future generations.

We don't need supposedly outraged outsiders getting involved..

I saw Callum Marshall not wearing one last night. Who else?

I don't fancy a team of James McClean's, but Marshall doesn't look like he's ever going to make it with us anyway.

When was it decided that the poppy only represents the British who have died in wars?

Who made that decision?

Couldn't give a fuck. They're happy enough to take the knee like gimps, they can also tolerate wearing a Poppy for those that died so we can live ours in relative peace. Silly cunts wouldn't know they're born to take such a stance..

Again, it should be made compulsory as it was before the change. This is the Clubs decision. They should be leading, not pandering to woke bollocks.

What change?
Mate, let's agree to disagree on this one, eh?

Sure thing. I come from a family - and someone who cares passionately about my Country - connected heavily to the military so this means a lot to me, especially with connections to supporting the Club.

As I've said, that's the players choice.
Not neccesarily the decision of the club, because as you say, some players are not wearing one which indicates that others are. So, not dictated by the club.

I fucking detest the board, but am not really sure what they've done wrong in this instance.

It absolutely is the Clubs fault for pandering to 1 thing yet devalue the whole point of players representing our Club paying respects to those that lost their lives so we can all enjoy ours. It's not asking for much. It should have been left as compulsory if you want to represent this Football Club with strong links to the Blitz or indeed this lot...
