Well. If there is a god he must be a Spurs fan. He’s made us WH fans suffer over the years…

Re: Do you believe in God?
I think the real problem in any belief is that you are possibly believing in a higher authority. That you believe other people or that there is something beyond you. Cheesy. Having good knowledge that works for you is the best you can do mate.

Re: Do you believe in God?
"BRANDED 3:08 Wed Dec 13 The concept of homework and it's impact is fully understood by all, however it is contemporaneously labelled. Whether you call a bird (of the feathered type) a house sparrow or a Passer domesticus, it's still the same creature and doesn't give a fuck what label is applied to it. At the moment there are two significant indicators for Dark Matter and Dark Energy being real: the universe is speeding up it's rate of expansion and something has to be driving that, possibly whatever Dark Energy is. Plus there is not enough visible mass in many galaxies to hold them together at their observed rate of rotation, so something has to be preventing them from spinning themselves to destruction - possibly the gravity from possible Dark Matter; nobody is claiming, so far as I'm aware, it's just a couple of ""God's mysterious ways""."

Re: Do you believe in God?
"I've never believed in it. Certainly not in a religious sense. I can accept that there's a lot that I don't know and that in the future, science will discover and explain things that we can't even imagine now. But I'll never believe it just because it's in an old book and that religious people assert that it's true."

Re: Do you believe in God?
"Mike I saw this lovely Lady physicist involved in a talk about the general theory of relativity and cosmology. She said she says to her students that if they don't hand in substantial home work they can call it ""Dark Homework"" and they'd get away with it."
Re: Do you believe in God?
I just googled ‘Are religious people better than atheists’ and you’re over egging the pudding Wils mate. Not the best research tool but there seems to be evidence that actively religious people are happier. Probably because they have a social community to belong to unlike most on WHO that think all other WH supporters are cunts…

Re: Do you believe in God?
"""Mike. You better hope they will observe it otherwise its the biggest house of cards in the history of science."" Why? Why had I better hope they will observe it ? I suggest that discovering that the speed of light is not a constant or absolute limit for how fast objects with mass can move through spacewould be a far more impactful ""house of cards"" to come crashing down."
Re: Do you believe in God?
"""Oh OK so having faith doesn't make one a better person, it just gives one a better life. Isn't that a rather spurious,"" No it isn't spurious. Religious people report markedly lower levels of depression, family breakdown, loneliness, suicide and all the other social ills that flow from this: they end up (in the UK at least) with higher levels of education, more financial security etc etc. At the community level it also leads to lower crime rates. This isn't my opinion this is all well known It's statistical, so perhaps this isn't the case for you personally, but it is the case statistically. None of it is a reason to believe in God's existence as I have repeatedly said."

Re: Do you believe in God?
""" It takes indoctrination as a child"" sooooo. A child is born with all the knowledge and ability to do algebra? For what it's worth. Religions do constantly evolve but the belief in one god is something that is held by billions."
Re: Do you believe in God?
"Wils 1:30 Oh OK so having faith doesn't make one a better person, it just gives one a better life. Isn't that a rather spurious, almost arrogant claim? I'm not sure of the justification for that? I guess if most people are atheists in UK it's an easy connection to assume it is the cause of inherent problems. So what is the excuse for deeply religious countries like Saudi Arabia or Iraq I wonder? I disagree entirely with your explanations on atheism too. Atheism is entirely natural and as you say the norm. It takes indoctrination as a child or traumatic life experiences to push people towards religion and a god to give a false strength. If no-one had invented this myth called god I wouldn't need to deny him/her/it."

Re: Do you believe in God?
Only you are absorbed by me. No one else gives a fuck. I'm merely interested in Science and Philosophy and am forwarding some ideas proffered by top scientists and philosophers I have listened to in recent years. Mike. You better hope they will observe it otherwise its the biggest house of cards in the history of science.
Re: Do you believe in God?
"""I'm merely putting the logical and scientific argument..."" --------------------- No you're not. You're confusing and misusing quotes. Probably from Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Scientists know and prove that dark energy is there same as gravity. What they can't prove is how it works. That doesn't mean that it is a god. It is a possibility though but no-one is suggesting it as far as I know. It's most likely that it hasn't been worked out yet that's all..."
Re: Do you believe in God?
"Willtell 10:46 Wed Dec 13 ""Wils wrote... I don't believe I have ever made that claim. (about religion making someone a better person). Here is what you said earlier minus the irrelevant parts Wils."" That quote of mine is saying something very different. It's saying that your life will better, not that you yourself will be a better person. You can, as you have pointed out yourself, be religious and be a bad person. My point was that you will, statistically, be exposed to less hardships and miseries than if you were an atheist. That doesn't make you a better person. ""Atheism isn't a fashion statement mate. It's a deep seated conviction that god does not exist "" That may be the case for you, who am I to know any different. But clearly that's not the case for most people. Many atheists like to think of themselves as free thinkers and rebels. Maybe they are, but being an atheist is the norm, so your atheism is no indication of your 'free thinking' as its conforming with the society you are a product of. If you want to convince someone that you are a free thinker, putting forward your atheism as evidence wont stand up. As is often pointed out on this thread, coming from a religious family it is highly likely that your children's religious beliefs will align with those parents. But that is just as true for atheists. If your parents are atheists it's very likely you will be influenced by them and adopt same the position. Especially if all the other people in your life whose respect you value are atheists too. ""But you openly make a lot of assumptions about those that do not have faith."" And what of your assumptions about believers...?"

Re: Do you believe in God?
"BRANDED 1:06 Wed Dec 13 Just because we can't see something doesn't mean or prove that it doesn't exist. You can't see wind, but you can see and feel it's effects - quite possibly the same process with Dark Matter/Dark Energy - we can't see it but can see it's effects. I also suspect that it will be discovered/explained in the next 10-20 years and have it's own ""Big Bang"" labelling history."

Storms, Hurricanes, floods, rock falls etc. Not to mention god invented cancers, epidemics, child diseases and many other horrific ways for good people to die..."
