It has got to the stage now where I practically can't access this site anymore... I have given up trying from home and my mobile as I just get the message that the Page cannot be found 95% of the time. At work it's only 60% of the time! Anyone else having this issue... been like it for the last couple of weeks?
Re: This site
zebthecat 11:33 Tue Jan 23 I realise what I posted below doesn't answer your original question about what happened. so... My understanding is the host company of the .net site went down over the weekend. Neither I nor Northbank knew why at the time and Northbank had to wait until Monday before he could contact anyone to find out. I don't know the full details of what happened but they sorted it out and brought it back up. So I switched .co.uk to point back to .net
Re: This site
"Zeb (and other techies that are interested) I set up the .co.uk domain and have pointed it to .net site with some heavy caching to take the load off the origin point and also as some people are experiencing connectivity issues connecting to the .net site from some locations. The .co.uk domain is accessible to everyone so enables those who can't see .net to access the site. I have set up Cloudflare in front of the .co.uk that takes off 80% of the load by caching images and static content like css files and javascript on a CDN, this stop the .net site from having to deal with them and serves them to your browser much faster than the .net site can. I am also using Varnish on the .co.uk server so multiple requests for the same url within 30 seconds will be served from memory without being forwarded to the .net site, to protect it from having to do unnecessary database queries, which is ultimately what is causing the problems. Each time someone posts something the Varnish cache is invalidated so the next request will serve the fresh content. I am in touch with Northbank and we are planning to have a chat later in the week. Either he or I will keep you updated. @Zeb, I think we have similar skills and limitations, my CSS is hacky too as you will see if you look at the changes I have made on .co.uk. But my excuse is that with no access to the .net site I am having to do a lot of it with apache rewrite rules. If we plan to do something that requires me chewing of more than I can handle myself I will be in touch. Cheers mate!"

"Wils 6:46 Tue Jan 23 Do you happen to know what was done to fix the site? Apache had definitely fallen over. The last thing I heard boody could get on the server(s) although I imagine that theire is only one. I am a developer and am happy to help with any db/application stuff if it a platform I know (not php - mostly java running on a linux flavour and all sorts of database: SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL/MariaDb, Postgres and even informix c. 30 years ago). The only thing I am a bit with is css. I get there in the end but it is a painful slog."

Re: This site
"Thank goodness there was a report yesterday in the news of a bloke in a straight jacket called himself Vexed complaining that his access to a West Ham site had been blocked, when questioned he said that some people were out to get him, he cited Hammer & Pickle and a David Moyes, that they were in cahoots with one another."
Re: This site
"Maybe get Northbank(?) to run a poll, or a separate thread to ask anyone for objections in the process of moving the site over, or for any key considerations. It needs to happen regardless for long term viability. This site holds an important niche in the West Ham community. Am sure people will get on board regardless."
Re: This site
"Stubbo, I agree things are fragile as it stands and I am happy to continue. It shouldn't be too much of a time sink if it involves integrating ready rolled solutions into recognisably WHO site with the same users and functionality. I can even set the clock wrong to make us all feel at home. May take a few weeks if the commitment is there. But the important thing is the site is nothing without the people. So all the mods and everyone involved with this current site will need to be onboard. From the people I have spoken to I think the will is there but importantly I don't want to tread on anyones toes. I am relatively new here and I am not the owner of the current site."
Re: This site
"@Wils Are you still working on the move to a more stable platform? Seems that it came back up is no reason not to commence the switch, unless of course it's too much of a time sink for you. The death of this site is surely when not if, and getting there ahead of time would make a lot of sense."

"Thanks for all the thanks. I didn't do anything to get it back up and running in the end, just set up a provisional plan should it not be rescuable. Northbank is the one that got it back up."

Re: This site
I had a good laugh imagining everyone trying to log in (probably repeatedly as I was doing). Then when I managed to log in yesterday I was expecting some sort of thread saying who's accounted for and typical Who it was the same as ever.

"To be honest I feel like I've got my life back not having to read through a sea of Hammer & Pickles drivel. I try to skip through them when I see them but sometimes read one by mistake and a dark depression descends, I quickly go onto to the Anxiety thread which is genuinely uplifting and I snap out of it, Pickle doesn't post on their mind."

"I must confess, and I feel a bit dirty for saying this, but I missed the old site not functioning at the weekend. I didn’t want to go back to kumb or whtid seeing as they’ve both banned me numerous times so I’m quite relieved now. But the big disappointment is the site is no different. I was hoping that it had shut down to to undergo a shiny new makeover. Some hope."
