The decision to bowl was purely because it is Anderson's final test. Emotion over logic.

"still early, and the lacquer may come off the ball, but doesn't look like the best decision to bowl necessarily. Pitch is slow and pretty flat. Seem to be counting on the West Indies being crap. Only thing of note is that Anderson is bowling quicker than Woakes."

"Foakes averages 29 from 25 Tests, and doesn't necessarily score as quickly as the team is looking to. Smith is a proper batsman, immensely talented, but has only kept wicket twice for Surrey this season...... because Foakes keeps. Smith deserves his place as a batsman.... but as a wicketkeeper, Ollie Robinson is the one who should have been selected really. So yes, its a little bit square peg round hole but by no means the worst we've done."

Can a proper cricket fan tell me why they just don't fancy Foakes and whether Smith is a proper wicket-keeper/batsman and not another Bairstow style wannabe?

Going to Lords next Thursday....It's the usual Lords/ECB rip off. £115 for a fairly average seat.

"McSvender, as a mongrel you would know why you had to pick another nations cricket team instead of England….it’s why you are bitter and have digs at those from other multicultutures that are here….I mean what’s so bad about corner shop ownership for you to use it as a dig at me? you must be racist…."

You seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that I give a flying fuck about your opinion As a real East Ender I suspect your real father was that nice man who ran the corner shop & used to give your mother extra portions Surprised you don’t like cricket with that background

Am sure he is a good batsman but odd that presume he is the back up keeper to Foakes at Surrey Who is designated keeper in that match? Strange situation Maybe if he is a bit rusty he might drop a sitter with Anderson on 707 Test wickets

I’ll never get bored McSvender pointing out what a gypo you are when it comes to you and your picking and choosing of your nationality….

"Was at the oval today, sven son. To be fair, Jamie SMITH looked completely different level. Green wicker, and test match batsmen like burns, sibley, Lawrence and foakes looked all at sea. Smith smashed 100 off 132 and middled just about everything. The two Judas ISCARIOT types were lucky to make 13 between them. Feel for Robinson, averaging 80 batting Durham and actually keeping wicket very obviously trumps averaging 50 at the oval while not keeping wicket, but happy to see smith in the side"

It’s such a shame McSvender that the only way you can pretend to be an Aussie is by the discussing of a game called cricket…..born in England & spent most your life in England…..you’re English son…..just continue blanking the Scottish half…..

West Indies have been in a pit of mediocrity for near on 30 years but showed some sparks in a deserved 1-1 drawn series in Australia in January where they won by 8 runs Shamar Joseph was the big revelation… 7 wickets in the last innings to win the Test Test cricket needs a decent Windies team

"Can only guess Foakes has upset the Kiwi leadership clique Seems very harshly treated for a very good keeper. Agree with that. England going back to who they think is the best batsman, who can keep a bit (Smith, although averaging 50+ with the bat in the Championship, has only kept wicket twice, Foakes doing the rest)."
