West Ham agree deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes

By David Ornstein and Jacob Tanswell

West Ham have agreed a deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The deal is set to be worth £38million ($51.3m) with £3m worth of add-ons and a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

The 21-year-old Portugal youth international will be West Ham’s sixth signing of the summer, with the London side also in talks to sign midfielder Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco.

Fernandes joined Southampton in the summer of 2024 from Sporting CP and has made 46 appearances for the south-coast side that got relegated last season, scoring four goals and registering seven assists. He has played 36 times for Portugal’s youth teams up to under-21 level but is yet to make a senior international appearance.

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season with seven games still to play, only a year after their promotion.

West Ham have lost their opening three games of the 2025-26 season, two in the Premier League and one against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. They are next in action away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the league.

Nice stats. Not sure they mean much considering they just show that he was the best player in the 2nd worst Premier League team of all time.

Maybe I'm going mad (the BS effect) but Transfermarkt only have him down for 9 goal involvements for Southampton not 11. Optas surely right? 🤔

At doing what exactly? Not being facetious as it was them that watched him every other week. Basing it on last season Southampton shipped in 86 goals and only scored 26 teaming up alongside Walker-Peters who we now have as well. We sit rock bottom dropping over £60M on relegated players. It's very risky but who knows, could pay off.

Makes me think further about how wise it is to go after players that just got badly relegated then plonking them in a side like ours devoid of any confidence after a bad season ourselves.

Hermansen, Walker-Peters and Fernandes confidence must be at an all time low which concerns me. Not a clever policy in my opinion.
I agree that it is a very high risk strategy. In fact, it is arguably insanity to drop £20 million on a keeper who's team has just been humiliatingly relegated and £40 million on a midfielder from a team that just finished rocked bottom and had the second worse Premier League season in history.

Only at West tHam eh!

Hopefully both Magassa and Fernandes rip it up in the middle of the park and we start to climb out of trouble. Intrigued to see how they get on.

I think it’s a really good signing. I try not to get too bogged down on the transfer fees. I hear people’s concerns but if it’s the option of signing nobody or overpaying slightly, I’d pick the latter.

£40 million seems a lot for a player from one of the worst Premier League teams ever. Hopefully he has the pace, skill and agility that the midfield severely needs.

if Fernandes and the Monaco lad turn up. ALongside Potts and Paqueta that can see us through to Jan

I would much rather we focus our efforts on a right sided CB and a Striker.  A number 10 would also help

Seems to be the No 8 we need.  Only saw him a couple of times last season and he did look very good in one game. Strong, quick, good feet etc.   If the lad from Monaco is the number 6, I would agree we still need another central midfielder, another number 8 really.  Although that leads to a discussion about Paqueta best role.  For me, he is not a number 10. Lacks the pace and struggles with the physicality with his back to goal, cannot play on the half turn. He likes to get the ball under control, get his head up and look to thread or knock a pass to the front men.  He can get a tackle in, its just his ability to resist being pressed that's his issue hence its better when he is deeper and looking to link defence to attack as a no 8.  Its where he played his best football at Lyon.  He was more of a No 10 at Juventus or some Italian club and didnt do very well.

With a stronger central midfield unit though, a player like Paqueta should do better so I hope we keep him.  If rumours of selling our stake in the womens team is true, you would hope Sullivan wont be unzipping too quickly if offers come in?. Although this is Sullivan we are talking about. Who's Paq's agent?

Anyway, another central midfielder, CB and central striker and goalkeeper all thats needed now 😆

I read that the womens team was valued at £55 mil and they were selling 49%.

"Do the math on that" as Eni Aluko would say.

If it ends up being Fernandes and someone such as Timber then maybe Paqueta will be off? Otherwise i think Paqueta stays.

As said on here previously, we need 2 DMs ideally so Magassa and another.

Yes, feels like that might be on the cards

Will Still on Mateus Fernandes: "It's mixed because Matty is a good player and a good human but he wants to leave. It's incredibly difficult to keep people that don't want to be here and it's best for everyone if we move on. He wants to go to the World Cup next year

He was comfortably their best player in a terrible team
Dibling showed promise as a teenager so obviously both are off
Looking forward to some legs & creativity in our midfield
