Well it's a fast turnaround for this one.  After a hard fought, but somewhat disappointing point at Old Trafford, we head to the south coast for an arguably more difficult looking game on paper.

Brighton have been a bogey side since they arrived in the division, as well as being the envy of many fans for their progressive owner and stellar recruitment model.

Teamwise, Nuno gets to 'bring' Paqueta back (I won't use the term 'welcome'), and the messaging around Summerville remains opaque at best.  Plus as to what happened to Guilherme who knows, but with both him and Igor missing we went from a squad of 3 Braziliians to none versus Man Utd in one fell swoop.

This leaves at least a decision around Soucek, but if Summerville (or Guilherme) were to be available, another decision around 2 of 3 from Fernandes, Magassa, and Potts.

Predicted Lineup

I'm working on the basis that Paqueta will come back in, and Summerville will at best be fit for the bench:
Areola

Wan Bissaka  Mavropanos  Todibo  Diouf

Magassa  Potts

Bowen   Paqueta   Fernandes

Wilson

Subs:  Hermansen, Kilman, KWP, Irving, Kante, Earthy, Guilherme, Summerville, Marshall
Predicted Score:  Brighton 2 - 1 West Ham

Brighton remain high up in the current form table, scoring twice as many as they concede.  West Ham are midtable over the last 5 games, are at a scoring ratio of roughly 1:1.

Hard to see anything but a defeat here, but we have a punchers chance (all be it, the blows themselves are fairly lightweight and will need to find the Brighton chin with surgical precision to knock them out).

Never mind we should have won. We could have even lost towards the end when they woke up.  That’s a point I will respect all day long.

on to Villa next week. They have a midweek away euro game and we have a week off. Should be a good game and let’s hope for a priceless win at the bowl.

Two wins in ten now since this negative, ultra defensive, bus parking Portuguese prick came in.

Its similar to Moyes football. Lacks quality and progressive attacking play. We can only score if we are lucky to get a defensive mistake and can get a run on net. The subs killed us again. I knew we would not hold on because when you put too many players back there they get in each others way and it always lands with the opposition. Of course their goal is controversial. I mean if he doesnt handle it then he cant shoot, Areola doesnt save and drop it to them.

I thought a few players did really well today. The point really doesnt do much for us but at least confidence wise we arent losing.

That's what concerns me, it's 1 unconvincing win against a poor Burnley side in 5 games. We need to start winning again to really dig us out this hole.
Under Potter we lose that 3-4 goals easy

They almost always get a late goal against us.

Even someone as shite as Neal Maupay scores worldly overhead kicks against us when we play this lot.

A very good performance in the main - Fernandes superb.

We don't look like the hopeless rabble we did two/three months ago.

I thought we played very well until we scored the goal and then went far to deep.

Good point that against a top half team.

Frustrating but at least it's another point on the board. Feels like 2 points dropped though inviting too much pressure after we did score. Beat Villa next then that's  a good week for us to get a fair few points on the board.

Only complete idiots think we parked the bus in that game.

They’ve set their stall out on Nuno and there’s no backing out of it.

By the way. It’s not really that we sit back. They overload because they are chasing the game. So if you’re marking properly you sort of have to go deeper to deal with it. Thats just how football is, that’s why it ebbs and flows.

The best teams can clear the ball in a more disciplined fashion and move the ball further up the pitch even when pushed back. Thats where we need to learn.

also, if areola doesn’t make the 1st save I bet that goal gets disallowed. I think the fudged the rules. Use of the hand to control the ball in any way that gives you an advantage and allows you to score can’t be a goal. Thats just mad. Don’t care how accidental it is.

Don't think you can truly be mad at Nuno there. Rotated the squad well, and with better finishing we'd have scored more goals (looking at you Summerville).

Sure he tried to hold on for a one nil, but they all do that. The instinct is to hold on with a few mins to go , and very different to what he did again at Bournemouth which was with a whole half and a force nine against us.

Good team performance, deserved a win, but our Achilles heal really remains putting the ball in the net.

yeah i think lack of end product cost us ultimately today. We need to limp to the January window and try and rectify it (not holding my breath based on us and January windows past). If we can pick up points along the way and remain in touch we can stay up based on today's performance.

Mav has to go down holding his head, ref has to stop play for a head injury.  Lots of much cleverer players would've done so.

It's pointless, isn't it..?

The whole thing is becoming pointless.

THAT was as clear a handball as you will EVER see - without him pulling it down with his right arm, he wouldn't have got the shot away at all.

BUT... once again we had them scared and sitting back, then we score and give up all the play... obvious they will pour forwards if we remove the threat of us breaking. We are THROWING points away, and we will regret it at seasons end.

As each season passes by I am growing increasingly baffled what the rules of the game are. It seems they are made up on a game to game basis.

First of all a dangerous high boot and then a handball that was a precursor to the Brighton equaliser and therefore directly affecting play.

I can't get angry with the game anymore because I just don't understand it so its best just to shake your head and forget about it.

Baffling.

Negatives - we should have won, plain and simple and we might well rue it. We proved again that deep defending a slim lead isnt a game plan we can entertain
Positives - Resilient performance for the most part. Kept them quiet aside from the last 10 minutes. Got the subs mostly right and you ant say we aren't slowly improving under Nuno. We are picking up points in games id have had us down to lose.

I'd have taken a point at Brighton all day long if offered.

Would have taken an away point against them at the start. Gutted to not win as we out thought them and outplayed them. I don’t think that team has ever had so few shots on goal compared to how many we had.

We are outplaying these teams in my opinion (Man U, Brighton). It’s not that they are shit. We are making them play shit, that’s the point.

I said the other day, I’m not so worried about the points at this point of the season. We need show progression in the way we play the game and I think we are a far improved. Even Guido had a good game which is crazy.

We just need to survive until Jan and get some proper finishers in at the club. We have a lot of good play but it’s getting rather wasteful tbh. I think Jan should be about getting some experienced forwards on loan. It’s not youth and energy we need. We need people who know where the goal is.
